Good game with two strong teams. Leafs just ran into a goalie who was red-hot tonight.
Pretty sure there have been a number of games this year when the Leafs have been significantly outshot but Freddie bailed them out. Just the way it goes.

A study by Cole Anderson of the Star shows Leafs would fall from 2nd to 14 with average goaltending

excerpt here:
standing adjustment if all teams magically received average goaltending this season.
TB still #1, but TOR falls to a bubble team, CGY new #2, followed by CBJ #3, MTL #4
PHI goes from #25 to #6
ANA/BOS top 10 teams but would fall well out of the playoff picture

Then credit goes to management for making sure that they had better than average goaltending. That is what a good big market organization does.

Shack: Is this a shot at the Blue Jays management team?

I thought the Tampa game was a lot closer than the 4-1 score would indicate. Tampa was lucky that they weren't a couple of goals down in the first period. They did play well enough to shut down the Leafs the rest of the way and showed that they're real contenders for the Cup.

There are a lot of speculations of Leafs looking for upgrades on the d, understandably so. I hope they don't trade Kapanan. He's been the most consistent player since started playing with Matthews. However, Dubas basically tied his own hands and limited his options when he made that "promise" of not trading Nylander as long as he's the GM. He tried to do some damage control by saying it was only an intention, but it would look really bad on him if he does trade him. I think it's a rookie mistake on his part and Nylander outsmarted him by making that promise known.

I am shocked, shocked I say, that you would think that.

I feel my statement is valid in and of itself, but fuck yeah, I was also taking a dig. LOL

I had a feeling that someone was gonna ask.

I'm thinking a deal involving Marleau, Zeitsev and a few picks to the Blues for one of their top D men may be possible.

I don't think it took a game vs Leafs to establish TB as contenders for the cup. Even before the Leafs game first overall in points and it's not even close. First in goal differential. Winning streak with number 1 goalie injured. Imagine Andrersen injured and Leafs playing Sparks for a stretch. The only question should be is TB the favourites to win it all. President's Trophy winners rarely win the cup though.

A 6 month tournament playing 82 games vs 30 other teams is very different from a 2 month tournament needing 16 wins first to 4 vs 4 teams to win it all.

I think it'll take a lot more. It'll probably take Kapanan +a 1st round pick, or Nylander (and Dubas's reputation). However neither Parayko or Pietrangelo would fit the Leafs' cap structure on a long term basis, so it'll be a very expensive rental for 2 years. It may be too big a gamble for Dubas to take at this stage of the Shanaplan.

Wayne Simmonds would probably cost less because he'll be unrestricted after this season assuming the Flyers don't resign him first. He'd fit perfectly on Matthews' line with either Nylander or Kapanan. In addition to scoring, he'll add the toughness that the Leafs desperately need for the playoffs.

The Bolts have had more time to develop their team, I expect them to be better than the Leafs. I like the idea of Simmonds, Hyman's needs help in the toughness department. He shoudln't have to go it alone in the playoffs.

I heard aboyt the Petrangelo for Nylander rumour, it would have been a bum's deal. Dubas knows from Leafs history that you don't trade a prospect for an older player. That's how Quinn and Dryden got into trouble and eventually got deposed by The All Highest.

Pietrangelo just had hand surgery so he won’t be available for awhile.

Patrick Marleau has a NMC. He's not going anywhere.

I hope it's just a coincidence and not related to the hit Matthews took in the Detroit game, but prior to that he had 7 points in 3 games since he came back from injury and the team won all 3 games.

In the 5 games after the hit he had 4 points in 5 games (2 garbage points in the Boston game as they came after the score went 6-1) and the team only won 1 of the 5. He hasn't been dominant and seems to be playing tentatively.

I don't know if he is tentative but during the game I was thinking that he's been almost invisible the last few games.

Matthews had one shot on net last night. Nearly had a second.
You had to admire the Barkov line last night, though. So dominant.
He’s on a six year contract at $5.9 million per. Good place to play hockey, tax wise. Too bad about the fan base.

The last 5 games. Sparks came in out of rotation and Andersen hasn't been dominant. Just one bad game vs Boston and the rest average. Power play 1 for like 18. PK not good. So special teams and goal tending. Willy comes back and the slide starts. Coincidence? Matthews definitely looks tentative. He pulls up. Doesn't want to get hit. Not good for a big man. Hockey is a physical game.

Gotta be able to take a hit to make a play. I remember the hit he took from Doughty. Prepared himself. Doughty bounced off and he made a play. That's how he's gotta play. Not pull up.

Barkov drew something like 23 penalties and took none. That is amazing. He buried all 3 chances he had for the hat trick. Plays smart defensively.
