Should.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a better hockey team with him on the ice than not.
The only reason the Leafs struggled with him out of the lineup was because his replacement Holl, Marincin or Ozhiganov was not NHL caliber. The Leafs couldn't win in the playoffs with Jake at 4m, they'll do a lot worse if they have to pay him 6+ m to resign him.

That is untrue.
His underlying numbers show the Maple Leafs are a better team with him on the ice than not, for the past 4 seasons.
The club scores significantly more 5 on 5 with him on the ice than goals they give up with him on the ice.
Does Jake give the puck up? Sure, know who else does a lot? EK65, Duncan Keith, Brent Burns.

not always sure...
ooops my mistake, the petty bastards did sign Smith. Not good for his prospects, the Senators are known for throwing their coaches under a cement truck.
Let's be thankful they didn't end up hiring Patrick Roy, who interviewed for the job.
That would have been two years of drama that nobody in the league would want to see.

Ottawa has low expectations. Good opportunity for a coach to get his feet wet. To get a top tier coach they would have to offer a Babs type contract. Big money long term
Mike Babcock signed his $50 million contract 4 years ago and there's still nobody else in the league making that.
It's 4 years later and he's still a huge outlier - nobody but the Leafs have offered that kind of money over that term.

He's +14 over the last 4 years and that's hardly "significantly more". (+9 for his 6 years with the Leafs)

The elite dmen you referenced play a lot more tough minutes against top lines than Gardiner ever did, especially the past season where he was often shielded from the other teams' top lines. He gives up the puck because he either loses focuss or is afraid to get hit, not from trying to make plays.

The Leafs got decent return for having him at 4mil but it'll likely take 6-7mil x 6 to resign him. That will not work within the Leafs' cap structure unless they dump a lot of salaries by trading Kadri, Kapanan, Johnnson and/or Brown. Besides, you just shouldn't pay that kind of money for a dman who you have to shield from other teams' top lines.

For what its worth, Sean Avery said the Leafs have traded or will trade Kadri for Trouba(sp).

Kadri trade was obvious fake news for several reasons. One he said have traded meaning already happened. That right there you should have stopped and not propagated fake news.
It just makes you look gullible.

The other is Mister Sloppy Seconds said it. He has zero credibility.

Third no one else said it. You honestly believe he is only one who would know.

Gardiner will not be a good fit as he plays on the left side. The Leafs badly need RH dmen especially if Zaitsev is traded.

From Jake's pov why would he want to get less money and booed by fans when he can get more money elsewhere and a fresh start ?

Marleau has put his Toronto house up for sale, looks like he will waive his no trade clause.

Great Leaf trivia question. When Gordie Howe came up for 1946-1947 for the Wings, he had a credible year, but did not win the Calder Trophy. Who won it? He was a former Hockey Night in Canada commentator. When he mentioned it, I was flabbergasted.

HM. Easy one if you were watching the Ballard years. What I didn't know was it was Howe's rookie season also. In his prime would Howe be a superstar in today's game? I don't ever recall seeing him play. Even when he was 50. His son Mark though was a very good player. Marty not so much.

Yes. A big, powerful man with soft hands and a mean streak.

My all time best forward line would be Gretzky with Hull and Howe on the wings.

Dion Phaneuf is now a free agent. Does any team want him?

Time to start a new thread on the 2019-2020 Leafs? Firstly, they need to get bigger and meaner.
