Either way it's better than the old Canadian measuring stick of # of personal bests
Hey if I was competing at the Olympics and score even though I wasn't anywhere near expecting a medal, I' d be really pleased.Think of the ypung women skaters for Canada.

I'm just glad Canada is looking to match their medal count from Vancouver, when they were on home ground.

The beauty of the ambiguity of the standings is that more countries can spin the results the way they want and tell their citizens how successful their respective programs were.

I would not downplay at all the importance of countries being able to use the ambiguity as a form of propaganda at home.

For that reason, I don't think they will ever come up with a definitive system for declaring final positions.

Agree with your observation. It's a win - win for every country. Go Canada Go.

They were talking 30 or more before these games. Looks like we are going to come up short of 2010 now. I'm not sure what other ones beside curling and hockey we realistically have a shot at now.

A guaranteed medal in men's hockey puts Canada at 25, versus 26 from Vancouver. Are there any other medals Canada has a decent shot at?

I'm not predicting now. I thought the speed skating and X Games stuff was done, but hey, another 3 medals today in that stuff lol. Tomorrow still has some bobsled, speed skating and snowboarding events, so you never know.

I think the medals should have a weighting: Gold (5), Silver (3) and Bronze (1) to get a tally for each country. That way gold does count, but so does silver (if a country has a large number of them, they would be above another with a higher gold medal count).

The official site lists it as golds ahead of total medals....so that is official.
All they do is make a list according to gold medals. They do not declare a winner and they do not want to declare a winner.

They have Poland with 4G, 0S, 0B (4 medals) ahead of Austria with 3G, 7S and 4B (14 medals). Clearly Austria had a better Games, even with one less gold.
