well it makes it less likely any black kid who had an interest in hockey will be detered from going to into the sport because of shit like this...banana throwing fans ,white hockey players doing monkey chants to other black players, N-bombs in NHL forums , white hockey players " paying homage" by putting on blackface....who'd want to play in a sport which such blatant racism? wanna know why 96 percent of people think its an over reaction? because 96 percent of hockey fans are white....

btw, why put blackface when imitaing Michael Jackson? his face was white...

I don't know about the amount of sports players going in black face, but whats with the media frothing over it everytime hoping they just caught a closet David Duke?

The only comfort from the article is the voting with over 96% consider it a media overreaction. The other group worries me though.

Fans and people know there is no message of hate, thus no story.
About the only poor taste costume I've ever seen in past yrs, is Prince Harry going in a Hilter uniform. Some things can't have a funny spin put on them.
But this is just harmless. Besides, maybe Torres put him up to it..lol
You don't seem to fully understand the history of blackface and how demeaning it is to black people. I can assure you that many find it offensive and do not consider the media coverage an overreaction, given the connotations of what blackface symbolizes. It really is no different to many African-Americans/Canadians than the Harry-Hitler costume was to WWII and Holocaust survivors, as it symbolized their oppression, exploitation and humiliating stereotypes. (Not to mention their murder, kidnapping and cultural destruction at the hands of the slave trade that facilitated it.) And given the power dynamic at the time of the minstrel shows' popularity, it was clearly meant as racist.

So while Bozak is probably not (i don't know him) a racist, he showed incredible insensitivity and poor judgment in using blackface. (Not to mention stupidity, given MJ's "pigmentation issues" as others have pointed out.)

Put it this way - to Kat and all those who say it's no big deal - if you had (have? i don't know you) a son or daughter, would you let him or her wear blackface makeup?

Didn't he show ultimate stupidity also cause he must have heard the reaction Raffi Torres's got last year ? How about this ... Why not play it safe if you choose to be in the public spotlight ?

That's not blackface, Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows, and later vaudeville, in which performers create a stereotyped caricature of a black person.

Didn't Prince Harry dress up as a Gestapo for Halloween?

Bozak is as dense as a cinder block.

Some people were upset with Robert Downey Jr going blackface for Tropic Thunder. Tom Cruise is envious of his guile and has decided to make a biopic on Wilt Chamberlain with himself in the title role.

Perhaps I don't understand, but I feel 'Blackface' is to make yourself up like Al Jolson, which is what some have done in the past and isn't funny to me.
But going out as a 'blackman' isn't the same. What Bozak did is no differant then Eddie Murphy being made up as a white man in a Saturday night live skit.

I have to disagree about it being the same as what Prince Harry did too. That costume I even touched on in my original post, and felt it was way too much. There is just no funny spin on Genocide.
But going up as the 'Thriller' version of Michael Jackson? I just see no harm in it, and don't see it as being done up like Al Jolson.
Is he going out mimicking a black man or is he going as Micheal Jackson . When you see Jordon , Ali , or Micheal Jackson ... Do you even see a black or white man or transcend race and you just see greatness .

Not even in the same universe.

Dressing up as a member of a group of mass murderers and dressing up as a famous black performer is equally insulting ? You are way off on this one Cap.

+1 again. I asked 4 black co-workers what they thought. None of them thought it was offensive. One lady made a GREAT point. She said looking for racial issues where they do not exist has a tendency to diminish real racial issues where a spotlight is needed.

I don't understand the big deal, people have different skin colours, that's a fact. If you want to dress up like someone famous who's black, and you're white, how else can you do it without painting your face black? Similarly, if a black person wants to dress up as someone who's white, how else can they do it without painting their face white? The costume would be pretty lame without the face paint. If I wanted to dress up as Michael Jordan and just wore an MJ jersey without painting my face black it would be lame.

I've never dressed up as anyone black, and don't plan to since it seems to be offensive and I'm not one to offend others, but it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. If a black person put mayonnaise on his face pretending to be white I'd think it's funny and clever, as a white person it doesn't insult me one bit. I wouldn't even get offended if a black person called me a cracker, but maybe that's just me.
