This thread has shown me that there are some people incapable of empathy - of truly understanding what it is to be a minority in a world.
Do I think that Tyler Bozak is a racist or meant to do anything hurtful? I don't know him, but I would say no.
Do I think that Bozak (and apparently many who commented in this thread) is ignorant and insensitive about what painting one's face black means to Black people? Absolutely.
Would I ever let my children paint their faces black to emulate someone? Pin their eyes back? Wear a turban and/or a painted dot on their foreheads. Not a fucking chance.
Watch and read the documentary "Ghosts of Ole Miss" (also known as "Ghosts of Mississippi"); read the stories about Danny Chen, Brushaun Anderson or Harry Lew; truly educate yourself on how minorities feel in this very white world of Canada/US. Then come back to me and tell me that painting one's face black is no big deal.
Otherwise, let your kids paint their faces black and send them trick or treating in Jane & Finch, Regent Park, Malvern, etc. You'll get a quick (and eye-opening) education on what black people think of it... yeah I know, you spoke with some black co-workers/people you know and they have no problem with it...
