Melatonin?

I've been having sleeping problems for quite a while now and maybe some of you can relate. I don't want to go the sleeping pill route and alcohol is out of the question.

I'm thinking of giving Melatonin a whirl. I'd be very interested in hearing some personal experiences either pro or con.
Thanks.

Craven.

Melatonin is a good rout to go for the best natural sleep. I used to use it alot when I was traveling to help with jet lag. It will not put you to sleep though but it will give you a better sleep. I found that it usually takes a couple of days to realy work. If you want to know more check out Dr Wells vitimin guide it has alot of great info

Does turkey make you sleepy ? It's the melatonin in it.

Melatonin is an excellent choice for a natural sleep inducer and it has possible additional miraculous side effects for those of us a bit older.
The amount taken is VERY important for the best total effect.
If you are in the 40-45 yr range take no more than 1 milligram about 1/2 hr before bedtime.
If under 40 take only 1/2 milligram.
If 45-55 take 1 to 2 milligrams.
If you wake up groggy, reduce the dose. I take vitamin D in the morning for a natural melatonin turn off.
If you take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory the melatonin effect will be blocked.

Above info from "The Melatonin Miracle".

Controlled substance?

I had good results with Melatonin a few years ago when I was suffering from insomnia: it gave wonderfully deep sleep effects, at least for the first couple of weeks until my system got "used to it". But I found that it was starting to be difficult to find it in health food stores: some would have it and others would tell me that it was banned by the government. The word I was hearing was that the government was getting pressured by pharmaceuticals to control the product (maybe it was too good) and that Melatonin would soon be removed from the herb market. It sounds from this thread that I might be misinformed about this and it is still readily available (in its concentrated, capsule form). ???

Not positive, but I think the chemical in Turkey and warm milk is Triptophan (sp?), not Melatonin. Or I could be wrong...

Thanks.

I appreciate the input.
I'm definitely going to give it a shot. Problem is........as far as I know it's not too easy to get in Canada anymore. Apparently there's still a few health shops that sell it under the table.
If anyone has a line on where I might be able to get some in the GTA of Toronto I would be very grateful.
You can PM me if you like.

TJ you are correct. It's triptophan in turkey - but triptophan is a precursor of melatonin. i.e. melatonin is manufactured from it. (indirectly I believe)

5-HTP

Try 5-HTP. You can get it at any GNC. It's a derivative of tryptophane.

It's not cheap though. Almost $50 for 60 capsules.
