A Confederacy of Dunces
Does anyone remember the name of the little steakhouse that was located just on corner of Carlton and Church? It was directly across from Maple Leaf Gardens opposite where the Hot Stove Lounge was located in the building.

It was one of the best Steak houses in all of Toronto.

Frank Veteers was the pizza joint by the gardens, Ginsburg and Wongs had the biggest menu I have ever seen, you needed arms longer than you were to open the thing.

The Alpine Hut - The name was cheesy but the food, authentic Austrian schnitzel was their specialty, was excellent. If you wanted comfort food this was the place to go. They also had a good selection of Austrian wine, very under-rated, it's the only Germanic state that produces quality red wine. It was located on Yonge St two blocks north of the Capitol Theater. It was almost empty in the summer months and disappeared in the mid 90's.:(

Another favorite was Tanaka's Steak House (on the west side of the Manulife Center). It was an excellent dating eatery, the tepiyaki chefs were extraordinary with their knife skills. The sushi was also of the highest quality.

I remember of chain of burger joints from the early 70's, the place was called the Red barn. I remember going there but I was really young so I don't remember much about the place.

Interestingly, one of my favourite high end restaurants that closed about two years ago - Mildred Pierce - just this week announced it's re-opening.

I used to like to go to Ginsberg and Wong's. The original was downtown somewhere but they opened another on Steeles between Bathurst and Yonge.

There was also a diner chain called Lime Rickey's - Eaton Centre.
Lime Rickeys. Prime Restaurants.
You know, Caseys, East Side Marios, Fionn MacCool's etc.

Like licking a salt shaker.

I had friends work at Ginsberg & Wong when they tried to open in Vancouver. Lasted 3 months.

Bassel's on Yonge -
Switzer's on Spadina
Red Pancer's on Bathurst Street
Dirty Bagel on College
Crescent Grill on Spadina
The Noshery on Eglinton

Those were the days - you could get indigestion all over the city for $5
