Mini Cooper is a Consumer's Digest Best Buy.

good interior space, excellent styling, great reliability, and great on gas, and handles well and is actually quite fast. if it's the car you like- it sure is a cute one that glows of youthfulness and excitement. it is one of those top pics of young ad executives and graphics arts type people that made the ipod so hip. (pssst... they are super easy to park.... anywhere!)

i'm 6'5" - and i'd never by a mini-cooper, except if my s/o wanted one, i DO FIT in the damn thing!!! (which i can't say about too many other cars, including the A3)

BTW- I don't like the Audi A3 at all... it's what I'd expect a snobby baby boomer to drive.

I believe the Mini Cooper comes ONLY with manual gear shift which if you enjoy driving is an enjoyment.
And if you really enjoy driving, you should go for the Cooper S.
Price-wise, the Cooper costs more (much more) than cars of similar size.
Visit a dealership, test drive one first.

I test drove one last year and it drives really nice, but for what you pay I dont think it is worth the price. You could get yourself a much nicer car in the same price range.

When I was at the autoshow this past year I checked out the specs. on the mini and thought it was highly overpriced. It seems like you can get a car with similar gas mileage, horse-power, engine size, with larger interior and cargo space for much less $. You are definately paying for the trendiness. That being said I am unfamiliar about their history with repairs.

I have a 2006 Cooper and it is a blast to drive. I am a big guy at 6'4" and 240, there are no fitment problems. I can carry all the cargo I need you just fold down the backseats and you get a ton of room. It really isn't more than a two person car. The backseat is ok for kids maybe but not teenagers or older.

They come in both manual and automatic. I got the automatic so the wifey could drive it as well. It does have paddle shifters for the sport mode if you really want to feel the need to shift. It is neat with no clutch and the F1 style paddles. I still suck people in on the ramps by downshifting and then using the low centre of gravity to corner.

The new model year 2007 is a beefier engine by Renault I think and the S version is now turbo charged not super charged. If you want a lot of fun for your dollar the Mini is a great little car and good in the snow as well. I had a 76 in the original design. The new ones are roomier and more comfortable and handle a lot better. BMW does own the marque but they are built in England nearby the original Mini plant by people who still understand the desires of the Mini crowd.

The price range for the various versions goes from 25k to 45k depending on toys and convertible or not. If you want more info Jillian feel free to PM me.

Just letting you all know.

I recently fell in love again with the Honda Civic.

I have a 2003 MINI S, just love it. If you like to drive, it is a great car. If you want to go from A to B don't get it. A little pricey for what you get objectively, cheap for what you get subjectively. Also recently #1 in resale value.

Zic good point on the resale value. Have you ever checked out the 2,3 or 4 year old ones. They seem to hoold there value realy well and Mini offers a program called Mini Next which if the vehicle is dealer serviced and mileage is kept in check, somewhat of a problem for me, you get incredible value on an upgrade or straight trade

Didn't some versions of the Cooper come with a CVT?

Depends what you want to do with the car. MINIs are nice but expensive for their size. If you are "green," might think of a Toyota Prius or other hybrid if you drive in the city. For the highway, there are many choices. Mazda3 is a good car so are Toyotas and Hondas. Cheaper and likely more dependable over time.

Why not join www.zipcar.com or www.autoshare.com. they rent by the hour. They have Minis. See how you like it and then decide.
