How the hell does a mom still have milk after all those years until their daughter is a teenager??

What media will do to sell ads, sheesh.

It is possible for a woman to continue lactating indefinitely. The milk "dries up" only after the breastfeeding stops (usually). In fact, even a woman who is not pregnant can be made to lactate if her nipples are sucked on excessively, daily, over a prolonged period of time - (High school experiment - don't ask lol).

It's been good to know ya
I breastfed both my other boys almost for 2 years each. The milk would not have dried up if I did not stop breast feeding them. There was also I recall when my one son entered kindergarten other mothers there that were still breastfeeding thier children. I was shocked that there were even still childrens parents getting lectures as thier children were still in diapers too. Children do hate to give up breastfeeding, but I will NOT have my child entering school still dependant on it.

My baby now is over a year old and I am still nursing him. I give him a bottle for his juice though and got a comment from someone outside that said he does not need a bottle and that I should have him using a sippy cup. lol They have no idea when I go to cut him off how much that bottle will come in handy. Maybe they assume he is not breastfed and I give him a bottle for his milk too. I think the sucking, the closeness to the Mother and who knows what else is just soothing for a baby.

The Mother and the child both bond, but to still be breastfeeding a teenager at her size I find really absurd. It is time for that Mom to face facts that she is a teenager and will not be long till she has a bf and possibly move out and get married and she will not have her to hold no longer. Raising a child also involves getting them ready for life unfortunatly on thier own and to survive without Mommy.

What will she tell her husband at 3 am when she leaves the bed? I have to go home now it is time for my 3 am feeding.

this is a good example of a mother should be sent to jail and charged with child abuse. I believe in woman's rights to breastfeeding but this is now on the lines of abuse. She should go to jail, teenager removed and the laws changed to refect the maximum appropriate age that beastfeeding does more mental harm than health benefits.

And what age do you suggest that should be?

What proof do you have that the teen is suffering any sort of mental harm by breastfeeding other than the fact that you don't think it's right?

Would locking mom up and taking the teen out of her home do more or less damage to the teen?

lol, I never said you were wrong (or right for that matter). I asked you to clarify your point with some proof to back up your claims and all you've done is get defensive.

So I say again, what proof do you have that the situation causes mental harm to the teen? What age do you think should be the appropriate age to cutoff breast feeding and why?

I agree that what they are doing is beyond the norm of our society btw, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it is wrong (or right).

If you're going to make unsubstantiated claims, don't be surprised if one of the debators on here takes you to task on it.

For what it's worth...

Our closest genetic cousin, the chimpanzee, has a life expectancy of about 60 years in captivity (i.e. has the benefit of modern veterinary medicine). The average female chimpanzee will breast feed until her child is about 4 years old.

To compare apples to apples (or bananas to bananas in this case). The average human in Canada lives to about 75-80 and has access to modern medical care. Now assuming that the purpose of breast feeding for an extended period of time is for the benefit of the child rather than some wacked out, new age, unscientific opinion then a reasonable amount of time for a woman to breast feed might be 4-5 years, not into their child's teens.

It's also interesting to note that most brain development in humans and chimpanzees is usually complete by 4 years old.

Now before anyone goes "ape" (sorry, I couldn't resist), I'm not saying that we can definitively draw any conclusions from this but I thought it would be interesting to add a little scientific observation to the discussion.
