monitor color help

Hi!
Someone please help me with this so called simple task before i kill my computer (and my monitor).

I want to change my monitor from 16 bits to 256 colors. How do I do this?

Normally to change monitor colors, i'd go into start, control panel, display, settings, and then change colors. However, this is not working. It stays on 16 bits.

I have changed it before once windows goes into safe mode on its own and I have since learned how to make it go into to safe mode purposely. This isn't working either.
I can't even change my screen area. The pixel is like fixed. What's the problem?

Kitty -- sounds as if it may be a problem with your video card. Can you access the software and did you try the connections and re-boot?

Hmmm I did not know you needed alot of power for a monitor
What would you suggest?
