The Facts … Nothing But The Facts

What has happened in the NHL over the last forty years or so?

Since 1967, there have been a total of 23 NHL teams that have been in a Stanley Cup Final.

Not only have the Maple Laughs not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, they have not even made an appearance in a Stanley Cup Final since 1967!!!

Not surprisingly since 1967, nos Canadiens are in first place with the most appearances at 11 and the most wins at 10. Obviously, nos Canadiens are in a class of their own.

The Bruins and Flyers are next at a very distant second place - they are both tied with 7 appearances each and 2 wins each. It's no wonder that in these cities (and most others around the league), they actually have banners of division championships and conference championships hanging from the rafters in the arenas. In Montréal, the only championship banners that are hanging from the rafters are the 24 Stanley Cup banners. We don't bother with the other championship banners … otherwise we'd run out of space.

List of the 23 NHL teams that have been in a Stanley Cup Final since 1967:

1. Montréal Canadiens: 11 appearances, 10 wins (1968, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1986, 1989, 1993)
2. Boston Bruins: 7 appearances, 2 wins (1970, 1972, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1988, 1990)
3. Philadelphia Flyers: 7 appearances, 2 wins (1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1985, 1987, 1997)
4. Edmonton Oilers: 7 appearances, 5 wins (1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990, 2006)
5. New York Islanders: 5 appearances, 4 wins (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984)
6. Detroit Red Wings: 4 appearances, 3 wins (1995, 1997, 1998, 2002)
7. New Jersey Devils: 4 appearances, 3 wins (1995, 2000, 2001, 2003)
8. Dallas/Minnesota Stars: 4 appearances, 1 wins (1981, 1991, 1999, 2000)
9. New York Rangers: 3 appearances, 1 wins (1972, 1979, 1994)
10. Calgary Flames: 3 appearances, 1 wins (1986, 1989, 2004)
11. St. Louis Blues: 3 appearances, 0 wins (1968, 1969, 1970)
12. Chicago Blackhawks: 3 appearances, 0 wins (1971, 1973, 1992)
13. Colorado Avalanche/Québec Nordiques: 2 appearances, 2 wins (1996, 2001)
14. Pittsburgh Penguins: 2 appearances, 2 wins (1991, 1992)
15. Anaheim Ducks: 2 appearances, 1 wins (2003, 2007)
16. Carolina Hurricanes: 2 appearances, 1 wins (2002, 2006)
17. Buffalo Sabres: 2 appearances, 0 wins (1975, 1999)
18. Vancouver Canucks: 2 appearances, 0 wins (1982, 1994)
19. Tampa Bay Lightning: 1 appearances, 1 wins (2004)
20. Washington Capitals: 1 appearances, 0 wins (1998)
21. Florida Panthers: 1 appearances, 0 wins (1996)
22. Los Angeles Kings: 1 appearances, 0 wins (1993)
23. Ottawa Senators: 1 appearances, 0 wins (2007)

he sucked but, still did better than Luongo and got deeper than Cristobal Huet.

though, Cam Ward won a stanley cup at the same age.

Considering the Flyers joined the league in 1967, this fact is pretty impressive.

For people under 50 there really isn't much difference in terms of Cups.

But I thought everything had to be in French? French people singing in English, and then they pretend they don't understand a word.

Ole ole and nah nah good-bye. That hardly takes anything away from webster English dictionary. I do see your point though. We forbid you ask a Pepsi the time. Haha. Montreal is ok. Quebec city is another story.

Price will no doubt be a big star in the future. So much pressure in Montreal. His stardom will come with another team.

I think Boston exposed a weekness in Price's game...his glove hand...the Flyers took full advantage of this weekness. It was pointed out by the FLYERS goaltending coach Reggie Lemelin prior to the start of the series and was a big reason the FLYERS kept shooting at his glove side high.

I think Price relies too heavily on pucks hitting him...he'd better work on his glove hand in the off season. When you're a backup they don't have as much tape available on you...but when you become the starter good coaches will find your weekness if you have one...consider Price's weekness found.

Nos Canadiens Are Just Getting Started

At yesterday's jam-packed press conference, Mr. Gainey made these comments about nos Canadiens:

"First, I want to thank our fans for their support, which was taken to a whole new level this season. At the Bell Centre, in the community, and across the country, our supporters made our team feel special, and that's important to any athlete. It also makes my job easier, when the players know they're playing somewhere as special as Montréal."

"Our goal is to uphold our tag as legitimate contenders, not just for a season or two but for years to come. Next year won't be any easier. We will once again have to earn our way to the top, and remember that we didn't begin the season in first place. We got there with hard work and dedication."

"We're now in the third year of a new CBA and we're getting more and more comfortable in this salary cap system. Every team has their own puzzle to piece together. Some teams simply try to emulate the Stanley Cup champions, but it's been a long time since a team has won consecutive championships in this league. We have our own recipe."

Sporting News - 2008 NHL Awards

The General Manager of nos Canadiens was voted 2008 Executive of the Year as announced by the Sporting News earlier this week. Winners were determined by a vote of their peers and individuals could not vote for themselves.

Gainey received 12 of the 28 votes cast by his fellow executives. By building through the draft, Gainey has developed a solid core group of current and future players that have placed nos Canadiens extremely well compared to the other NHL teams.

Félicitations Monsieur Gainey !!! :)
