The only "nudity" was a woman's breasts on a PC monitor. I was properly attired in my usual "Coors Light" baseball cap, "Lottery Winner" t-shirt, old jeans with bulletholes in the bum and knee areas and crocs. What now? Will the morality police also tell me how to dress when I'm in public?
Nope, but I would sure as hell sick the fashion police on you!

Seriously, dude, your rant has no merit. You forfeit your right to privacy by being in a public place. Furthermore, the library, and any governmental building has code of conduct policies that prohibit the viewing of inappropriate material. The only thing the woman did that wasn't appropriate is take the matter in her own hands. She should've notified the staff, who would have asked you to leave.

The breasfeeding situation was handled wrong, I agree.

The librarian getting angry because you were looking at explicitly sexual material in a public building? Come on rockslinger, use some sense. Who's rights are being violated, yours or everybody in the library that finds that material offensive? There may be young kids looking over your shoulder as well, you think they should be exposed to that shit?
And what does the country or ethnic background of the woman have to do with anything?

Simply put, you sound like an ass.

Back to seriousness. I did call the library HQ the next day and spoke to a really nice lady.

She said that the library has struggled and is struggling with the issue of censorship in an open and diverse society. The only policy they have is that illegal material are not allowed. (Illegal according to Canadian law and not according to the mullahs.)

They have considered and are still considering partitions to protect the privacy of all their patrons. I asked them about filters (like we have in my company). She said that filters are a form of censorship and they don't like censorship because where does one draw the line?

She said that looking at the bare breasts of an adult human female is not illegal under Canadian law. She said that I was being considerate when I complied with that woman's request BUT I WAS WELL WITHIN MY LEGAL RIGHTS TO DECLINE SUCH A REQUEST. (I am too nice a guy.)

She also said that the library serves a broad clientele and the many patrons and staff have varying degrees of openmindedness and what is or is not immoral. She also said that there are branches situated in more open minded
areas of the city (away from Lim and Hangman:p ) where people would not be fussed about something one could also see in an arts gallery or museum or Gay Pride Parade.

Then I asked her about a mother breastfeeding her baby in the library.

Man, you're such a racist, casually implying all mullahs are fundamentalist.

And don't go implying that I have any interest in trampling people's rights.

You have no idea what I've done for this country and its feeedoms.

Check my posts in the Political Forum. I use "mullahs" in the context of Iran. I also referred to Iran and mullahs several times in this thread. Yes, the mullahs in Iran are murdering thugs who trample on people's human rights like shutting down their access to the Internet and beating women who peacfully demonstrate for equal rights. To make you happy, I'll use the term "Iranian Islamic mullahs" but I thought that was already obvious.

Hahaha! I gotta be honest with you slinger, I've personally never seen anything like "BBJ-$60, FS-$80, PSE-$120" in an art gallery or museum. So to compare that to an escort website is stretching the connection just a little.

This has nothing to do with morality police or censorship, and everything to do with that little voice inside our head saying, should I really be doing this, most people say no, sadly some don't. :(

Censorship and morality come from within.

I sympathize with Rockslinger. He should have the right to view whatever legal material he wants to in a public library. The holier than thou attitude of someone who'd dare to approach him and tell him to stop, makes my blood boil.

Having said that, one would hope that we could maintain a certain degree of discretion and consideration for others. It's a fact that libraries are open and public places where kids and more conservative minded folk also have a right to be. The Library's considering partitions to protect the privacy of all their patrons is a sensible solution.

You sir (or madame) are an intelligent and rational person. As I mentioned, I spoke to a lady at the library's HQ and she said that they take the issue of censorship very seriously and their policy is to prohibit only illegal material. She also said that each patron's privacy rights should be respected. For example, I sometime do my banking using a library computer and I certaintly don't want someone looking over my shoulder.

That holier than thou person probably wants all gay books to be banned as well and breastfeeding mothers banished to the washroom. BTW I logged on to the website only to get a telephone number and within seconds this person appeared out of nowhere and started making a fuss:mad: .

So you're saying the library should install partitions so creeps can go in and surf porn for free without being bothered by others, should they provide paper towels too?

Look at any kind of legal porn in your own home, not in any public place! If you want to do it in public, go to a cafe, pay your fee, go find a computer in the corner somewhere and surf all the porn you want.

I think too many people play the censorship card, and in this case when the op called the library to get their explanation, they should have called him a creep and stay out of the library.

Time to close this thread. Some people are simply irrational and resorting to hyperboles where none are warranted. Mods, please close this thread. Amen.

Censorship and morality come from within?!?

Balderdash!!

Morality comes from within. But censorship doesn't exist unless it is imposed on you, by force, by government.

Wrong, we should censor ourselves and stop complaining when others have to do it for us when we're wrong.
