A bike is only as dangerous as the operator. Unfortunately there are far too many riders in the two highest risk groups, young under 25's, and old over 45's, who should not be on the road. If everyone were required to take a motorcycle safety course, and then rode their bikes accordingly, their survival rates on the roads would be significantly increased, to the point where their chances of accident avoidance are significantly increased more so than if you were in a car. Needless to say Society can't prevent stupidity, and we will continue to see bikers not wearing full face helmets, not wearing full protective clothing from head to toe, continuing to consume alcohol and ride at night, and continuing to ride beyond their levels of skill. What really kills me is those dudes who are out there in T shirts, shorts and sandals. I guess it's a free country but i really dont agree that insurance companies and the health care system should be responsible for repairing these peoples road rash. Much as in Quebec, where all cars must have snows in winter, all motorcyclists should be required to wear proper protective gear. What really gets me even more is when adults put innocent and very vulnerable kids on the back of their bikes in similarly inadequate attire. If you want to mess with your own skin so be it, but have a little more respect for those who entrust their lives to you.
