Just go to Canadian tire. If you don't mind waiting try garage sales.

I want to do some downhill.... Besides, does Canadian Tire have bike experts to properly size and tune your bike? Bikes at Canadian Tire are made with second / third rate parts (if you are lucky!) and the frames will not hold up very long (days), especially if I am going offroad / downhill.

You may be surprised. The reason bikes are expensive is mostly due to weight reduction. You can achieve that by going with fibre frames and thinned down components, Alu.... I would bet you that a fat ass steel frame will last you a lot longer than some light weight composite.

Though I wouldnt recomend a Canadian Tire Bike for what youre looking to do, I find that you do need an indestructible bike to do some serious downhilling, which really is different from XCountry and technical MTBing. Just stick to that Kona. Nothing wrong with an $800 bike to start. But from experience, I had an $800 Trek steel frame when I started out, and it didnt last 2 seasons of the abuse so those who say anything will do aint exactly ridden it for the pure joy :D Mind you it wasnt so much the frame, but the cheap ass components that broke and snapped. Components are huge in MTBing, and there is rationale to light weight - those who come downhill must first go up...and on technical shit uphill, or even easy uphills for beginners, you conserve more energy the lighter your bike is.

When you do get a bike hit Dagmar. Good beginners place, besides, its close to Toronto.

Exactly! You will be hard pressed to break a steel frame. It's the cheap hardware that kills it.

And, btw, plastic components is not necessarily a bad thing, it's cheap plastic that is a problem. Expensive plastic can be incredibly tough and light at the same time.
