Movie sequels better than the original

This may have been covered before but I'm watching "The Godfather 2" this afternoon and, IMO this movie is even better than the first, brilliant movie.

Usually sequels of great movies are a let down. Any thoughts on other sequels better than the originals?

There isn't many out there, although I did enjoy Terminator 2 more than the original.

T2, Rocky II
Agree.

I shall add:

- The Matrix Reloaded
- Aliens ( Alien was a good flick on it's own nonetheless )
- Final Destination 2
- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
- Police Academy 2

If I can count these as sequels:

- The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- Evil Dead

"Silence Of The Lambs" was a great sequel to the lesser known "Manhunter".

Empire Strikes Back (some argue the best of the 6 movies)
James Bond From Russia with Love (better then Dr. No) then Goldfinger was better then From Russia with Love.
Spiderman 2 was better then Spiderman
X-Men 2 (arguably)
Rambo better then First Blood

Recently, Letters From Iwo Jima is appartently far better then Flags of Our Fathers (if you consider it a sequel)

Was "Manhunter" the movie with Gil Grissom?
Yes. There was a more modern version called Red Dragon several years ago, which starred Ed Norton instead.

Highly debatable as to which is better, Red Dragon in the 2000s or Manhunter from the 80s. IMHO, Manhunter is the better movie.

There will be a prequel coming soon called Hannibal Rising.

Batman Begins is not a sequel. It's a totally new beginning.
Matrix Reloaded was definitely not better than Matrix, especially when Reloaded was all F/X not story driven.

Sequels BETTER than original

I'm sure opinion can debate some films like "Alien" and "Aliens" as both are terrific movies, but "Alien" was a better script, even though Aliens ended up as a better movie. The older I get, the more I like "Alien" over "Aliens". "Terminator" and "Terminator 2" is another. "Two Jakes" was terrific against "Chinatown" and there are loads more. But I think when risk is involved, it's Mel Gibson's "THE ROAD WARRIOR" that takes it over "MAD MAX" as Number 1 in my book.

Now if you were to compare the string of Batman movies from the 80's / 90's and Batman Begins to the old Adam West, what would you pick?

Adam West was fun, but Michael Keaton did a killer Batman

I agree with Empire. I'd also say Return of the King instead of 2 towers. The newer Oceans 11 is better than the Rat Pack one though it wouldn't qualify as a sequel. Manhunter was a better movie than Red Dragon and would have been even better with modern production values. Can you count it as a sequal if the original was better than the prequel? If so, Ghettysburg was better than Gods and Generals.

I may get mocked for this one but I always thought Die Hard with a Vengeance was better than both its predecessors. :p

Star Trek 2: Wrath of Kahn
Yes, Star Trek 2 was definitely superior to the first movie, which was awful.

On the other hand, there are some selections on this thread that I would disagree with:

-- In my view, Kill Bill 1 was the better of the two movies. I know part 2 was intentionally different in style, but I found it dragged a little too much.

-- I may be alone in this, but I prefer the original Mad Max over the sequels, including The Road Warrior. The first one was the most fun, and I still think The Toecutter was the best Mad Max villain.

Gotta agree that both Godfather I and II are great movies. What an incredible cast...Robert DeNiro, Marlon Brando, James Caan, Robert Duval, Diane Keaton, Al Pacino. How can you get better than that?

Outstanding performances by all, but DeNiro's performance was masterful.

It must have been extremely difficult to play the role of a younger character previously portrayed by another actor. Particularly if that actor was Marlon Brando. Watching him, you believed it was the young Vito Corleone.
