I have had a couple and I usually doze off it is a bit noisy but just relax and think of the HE at the end of it, just kidding that doesn't happen. It really is painless and quiet calming hope the results are positive.

I've had a few in my lifetime. I am a little claustrophobic. The way I handle it:

After you lie on the table and before it slides you in the tube, ask them to put something over your eyes, like a piece of cloth, or bring sleeping blinders and put them on. What you can't see can't hurt you.

They will also give you earplugs; some facilities will give your earphones so you can listen to music or a local radio station. It will discract you. I've almost fallen asleep inside. It gets a little boring in there once you get used to it.

Hello Miss Croft!

If you are claustrophobic then you will probably feel anxiety. If possible, go to your Doctor (preferably) or a Walk In Clinic and tell them you have anxiety and claustrophobia and feel a lot of anxiety in light of your upcoming MRI. Bring your requisition as proof.

Ask to be prescribed a SINGLE 0.5 mg tablet of Clonazepam. It is an effective anti-anxiety medication that will not make you drowsy. Or a SINGLE 0.5mg tablet of Xanax. This is more likely to make you drowsy.

Normally walk-in clinics won't prescribe benzodiazepines to walk in patients due to abuse and trafficking potential. But a single low dose tablet for your stated purpose should eb regarded as reasonable and with zero potential for abuse or resale.

I could tell you that there is no rational reason to feel anxiety but claustrophobia and anxiety don't care much about being rational!

Here is a video that might help you prepare and lessen your anxiety

I've been prescribed 0.5 mg of Ativan (aka Lorazepam, sublingual).

But I think Miss Croft would rather drink a few glasses of wine. Right Chloe?

My friend who has claustrophobia did it last Sunday. Brain MRI , took an Ativan before. They give him eyepatch, headphone etc... and put him in the wider machine. He was very nervous before but he laughed after. Don't worry! If you claustrophobic just cover your eyes with the patch and don't open ever and thinking about a carribean beach. If you not claustrophobic your feel would be great. You go girl! :) :)

CAT Scan (Computer Axial Tomography) is accurate but the current description CT (Computer Tomography)

In MRI they just rattle the electrons in your Hydrogen atoms (Magnetic Resonsnace Imgaging)

They're going to be looking at my brain. A little nervous about my head being in there and not being able to move.... And I've heard the machine makes really loud banging noises(?)
Oh, OK ... first a joke ...

What, are you afraid they will not find anything ? lol

Seriously ...

Yes, much good advice from other posters. I kind of forgot about the knocking, of course it will be louder with your head in there, but to me it was not loud to begin with ... but that is me.
I do not have any phobias.
I hate the no movement just the same.

Anyway, you are likely in there now. Hope it goes/went well for you.

Wish I could have held your hand.

You exhibit a zest for life and a kind, inquisitive, intelligent nature in your posts.
Use those attributes to create an adventure. I think you will be fine.
If memory serves me correctly, they give you a panic button so you can stop the procedure if it's overwhelming.
Best wishes from us all

Thank you. :)

As for my MRI, I loved it!!! When I first went in it I did all 50 states in alphabetical order and then backwards and then all the state capitals. Then I fell asleep somewhere around Columbus, Ohio..... the doc woke me up and said I was cute. I told him it was like meditating (no meds) and he said he loves MRIs and wishes he could do them every day. I agree although it's probably not good for you....

Very glad to hear that it went well. I hope that the results also are good news.

WOW!!!
You could get hooked up with the doc,and be set for life!!!
Invite him over to sample the veggies you've grown all by yourself.
If you play your cards right,he might even stay for dessert.
Of course it all might be for naught since he has just had a peek into your inner sanctum!
Hope all is well!!!

Did anyone else ever experience a headache the next day? I don't normally get headaches but have a pounding one today. :(

Glad to here it went well for you Miss Croft.

I went in for one when I got banged up from a hard upper body hit in hockey, & let me tell you its no place to be after a nite of boozing. Man I thought my head was pounding before I got to the hospital, holy shit balls I thought it was going to explode in there! Lesson learned

When you get MRI you are bathed in high intensity radio waves (if you feel your body heat up, that's the reason) plus a massive magnetic field. While technically "harmless" it wouldn't be surprising if you get a headache.

I've lost count of the number of MRIs of the brain I've had. For the last 16 years I've had 1 to 4 every year. Before that I had regular CT scans. It's been the consequence of a glioma diagnosis. Never had a headache the next day. An itchy nose that I can't scratch during the procedure is about the only annoying thing I've experienced in all that time.
