i used to be able to load messenger at work but never seem to be able to now. i thought maybe our IT guy setup a firewall or something. however, while touring the facilities the other day, i saw a young lady's computer screen and she was chatting on messenger. any thoughts? i miss chatting with some lovely ladies i've met online recently.

Some places of work have a lock out for new software. They do this so you cannot install any of your own programs or nothing that is not approved by them. We have that at our work. You need admin access codes to be able to download any new updates or new software of any kind. Depends who your It guy/gal is. Maybe just buy them a coffee. But if they are 'company people'... forget it.

Not to rain on your parade or anything but a recent survey stated that online chat at work has become a major cash drain on company's revenue. If I remember correctly (in the US) the loss of productivity due to chat etc. is somewhere around 1 billion USD annually.

A couple of companies I worked for stated in their standardized employment agreement that any misuse of online access is cause for immediate dismissal. This included chat, ebay, and online gambling specifically.

I'd check your company's policy on this because if they've blocked your msn messenger they are aware of the problem and it could cost you your job if you try to regain access.

We have this policy at my work but it is not enforced very strickly. If they did they would have to fire more then 1/2 our staff. I am given a little more freedom then most since I handle almost all the adult content ads in our publication. So I get to surf TERB, Blue-Pages etc for industry related news, leads etc. But to be honest... (NO I am not a 'company man') I think they should enforce this policy more. Like I said IMO too many people (not only here) spend 1/2 their work day on chat lines, sending personal e-mails, personal phone calls, 10 smoke breaks a day etc, etc, etc. Like I say... I'm not a company man but at the same time I think there is room in a lot of places for work ethics improvements.
