unassuming, Karen Carpenter does a sweet version of the song. But it doesn't have the epic sweep of the original. The song shaped Steven Spielberg's career, got me stoned and made Kim Mitchell lose his hair.

The "walk in the morning dew" opening is still freaky! Some believed that The Beatles had reunited.

Ya, when "Subrosa Subway" came out, everyone was agog, thinking it was the Beatles, it sounded like a song that could have been a track on 'Magical Mystery Tour".

Another hit Klaatu had was "Knee Deep in Love", you could swear that it was George Harrison singing.

Subrosa Subway was considered the Mccartney song, Calling Occupants was Lennon.

Originally a The Temptations hit:

Everyone knows that The Doors: Alabama Song was written by Weimar Republic composer Kurt Weill. Here's another.

Trent Reznor the writer of that song once said that initially when Rick Rubin asked him if it would be OK if Cash could cover Hurt, he didn't see how it could work.

But Rubin sent him a copy of the video and Reznor was blown away. He later remarked that Cash owned the song after that.

Cash's version is both powerful and poignant. Watching that video interspersed with shots of the old and frail Cash at the end of his life singing about how you can have it all with the shots of the young and Strong Cash looking defiantly into the camera always makes me tear up at the thought of life and one's own mortality.

Thanks for posting this.

Like CCR, most of The Temptations songs were written by Norman Whitfield (departed in 2008), except for My Girl written by Smokey Robinson.

Ball of Confusion is getting a new life thanks to Spike Lee and Denzell Washington's son.

Johnny Cash did many covers in his own way, injecting his own melodies. He turned Hurt into an elegy of his past sins.

Reznor wasn't the only one blown away, Chris Cornell never would have believe that his grudge classic Rusty Case could become an outlaw honky tonk song. He to was blown away. Tommy Petty took part in the sessions.

If Beethoven were alive today, and could hear Johnny Cash's Hurt, he too would be blown away. Not many musicians can turn an elegy into a hit. Adele has used the music of classical composers in her songs. With her soaring voice, it packs a big punch.

Of course she wasn't the first. The King did Ludwig Van his way (Pathetique Sonata).
