Ties are definitely not mandatory in my office, but I enjoy wearing a nice tie when it's not blistering hot. It's a nice piece to make me feel well dressed.
I like to dress for the occasion. Some professions deem a tie essential for professionalism. Others are way more casual and relaxed. At the end of the day, people who ridicule one form of attire over another are predominantly hypocrites. It's rare to find someone who truly does not care about what they wear. If that were the case, I would see a lot more shorts, Tees, and running shoes at typical 'formal' weddings (that are not at sunny destinations). Can you imagine being super colourful at a somber funeral? Like tank top and swim shorts...unless the funeral involved scattering ashes in the sea or something. On the flip side, I'm a huge hockey fan. Not wearing a hockey sweater to a game, or at least team colours or a team hat, is not in the spirit IMO. A handful of times I had to wear work attire to a game unexpectedly. Plenty of comments and 'looks' as a result.
So in the end, you are usually judged if you do not dress to match the occasion. And if you are doing the judging, there's probably some scenario where you yourself have 'conformed' to appropriate attire (even if you're a nudist). Appropriate attire does change; but ties are still in fashion.
If you don't agree that attire matters, then I challenge you to wear swim shorts, knee high dress socks with sandals and a worn concert Tee shirt the next time you see a SP.
