Ties are definitely not mandatory in my office, but I enjoy wearing a nice tie when it's not blistering hot. It's a nice piece to make me feel well dressed.

I like to dress for the occasion. Some professions deem a tie essential for professionalism. Others are way more casual and relaxed. At the end of the day, people who ridicule one form of attire over another are predominantly hypocrites. It's rare to find someone who truly does not care about what they wear. If that were the case, I would see a lot more shorts, Tees, and running shoes at typical 'formal' weddings (that are not at sunny destinations). Can you imagine being super colourful at a somber funeral? Like tank top and swim shorts...unless the funeral involved scattering ashes in the sea or something. On the flip side, I'm a huge hockey fan. Not wearing a hockey sweater to a game, or at least team colours or a team hat, is not in the spirit IMO. A handful of times I had to wear work attire to a game unexpectedly. Plenty of comments and 'looks' as a result.

So in the end, you are usually judged if you do not dress to match the occasion. And if you are doing the judging, there's probably some scenario where you yourself have 'conformed' to appropriate attire (even if you're a nudist). Appropriate attire does change; but ties are still in fashion.

If you don't agree that attire matters, then I challenge you to wear swim shorts, knee high dress socks with sandals and a worn concert Tee shirt the next time you see a SP.

As you mature and grow into yourself, as a man, I'd be surprised if you don't enjoy a suit more. It's a classic look to look professional. When I was in my 20's I couldn't care less about a suit. Now that I'm in my 50's, I even take delight in not only learning the new spiffy necktie knots like the Cape, but also busting the balls of my slovenly dressed intern. Seriously management, what are you thinking with these pups?

It is a generational thing. I think that newer companies like Microsoft, Google, Virgin, Facebook, etc. tend to be more casual in their dress code. Even old staid banks are becoming more dress casual. The male tellers at our local bank branch don't wear ties. In fact, one of them even wears an earring.

an old irish guy at my previous job said "how do you know you're at work without a noose around your neck?"
Sounds like Celtic wisdom to me :applouse:

Suit and tie every day. If I go into work in anything else, I feel weird.
