Anyone have experience/advice regarding netbooks? In particular the Acer models?

Really Retired.....REALLY!
I've done a bit of research as I want to get one in the near future as well.
Are you looking to run linux or Windows?
And what are you planning to use it for?

I can't get it to connect to the wireless router, though...

anyone have any sites to help me out with this...?

a friend suggested I go to a starbucks cafe with free wifi to check to make sure the netbook doesn't have any defective parts when it comes to picking up wifi..

I purchased 2 Asus 701 2g Surf's for my 13 yearold sons and am very impressed with them.

Start up quick, run quiet with extremely fast wireless access.

Great for email, surfing etc....runs linux so virtually virus proof.

I looked at Acer, MSI, Dell etc but found Asus to be the best reviewed.

The market is also flooded with them as the Royal Bank had them as a promotion and many are reselling them.

Actually it's for my daughter. She isn't a geek so it would be Windows and for surfing and email. Is it possible to download music on these things?

Paid $250 for the first one and $200 for the second.

Both were BNIB and were from the Royal Bank promotion.

Tip...buy the cheaper 2g surf and if you want you can upgrade the Ram and buy a SD memory card later.

For basic use the 2g model works great.

I was thinking of the Acers too, but apparently one of the recent models has a very slow hard drive, which affects overall performance. Look it up.

how do you re-install the Windows that comes with it?

in case (i.e. during a LINUX install), you screw things up

I had a problem with the wireless on my AAO in windows XP. The wireless would work and then all of a sudden just drop and after a few reboots it would start working again for a little while and repeat the same problem. I went on the Acer Aspire Forums and found someone had a similar problem and recommended installing this:

http://www.downloadsource.net/16286/Toshiba-Atheros-Client-Utility-Windows-XP/

I know it says it is for a Toshiba but the Acer uses the same wireless Atheros chipset and since I installed this haven't had any issues accessing wireless at home or outside at other wireless access points.

If you are planning to get an Acer Aspire One I would get the model that comes with 1gb of ram and a 160gb hard drive as opposed to the solid state drive (SSD). The SSD is not ideal for running Windows XP because windows is constantly writing to the drive. You might also want to get the 1gb ram models because the 512mb can not be upgraded easily since Acer is using soldered in ram sticks to keep manufacturing costs down.

Average price for this laptop right now is between $369.99-$399.99. I bought mine back in July for $399+gst shipped from a place called directcanada.com. At that time it was the best bang for buck IMO. Another reason I picked it was because the resolution is 1024 instead of 800 like the Asus EEE's. 1024 woud mean less side scrolling too. If you have a bit more money to spend in your budget you should consider the Asus 1000h which has a 10" screen.

One last thing to look for is a 6 cell battery over a 3 cell one. My netbook battery charge lasts me a few days totalling around 6-7 hours of usage easily with Wifi enabled. A 3 cell is rated only 2.5 hours which is barely enough to even watch a DivX movie rip. Another thing I will tell you is that you will have to get use to typing cause the keyboards are kind of small and the one real flaw with the Acer is the keyboard feel very cheap.

I have a Black ASUS 901 Atom 1.6Ghz 2GB Ram, 16GB Solid State HD (4 + 12), and a 16GB SHDC card for extra storage. I run WinXP SP3 and the thing boots up faster than my regular PC (about 30 seconds max). I can run Office 2003, games, and pretty much any app. You just need to be cautious of space.

The biggest benefit of this model (intel Atom ones) which is not always mentioned is the BATTERY LIFE. I can run 6-7 hours easy with Wifi turned on. Try that on a full laptop. MAKE SURE you get one with the new Intel ATOM processor and not the Celeron if you want loooooooong battery life. I even don't bother carrying the power pack and can use my laptop for a couple days. It's mobility in the truest sense.

It runs quiet and is extremely small. Most apps load alot faster on this compared to my PC (due to solid state HD) but writing can be slower, but not noticeable after a few easy tweaks.

I would suggest NOT getting the non-solid state version as they are not as shock proof (think about it, you're carrying it around everywhere), and unless you really plan on putting your movie collection on it, there is really no need.

There have been alot of operational problems with the Acer ones. compare them, ALOT more features but for less money??? hmmmmmm... The place where I got them told me there were alot of returns. But Acer could have improved by now.

Thanks to $5 for lifetime Wifi at Starbucks, I use it practically everywhere. Sometimes, when I need quick internet, I literally drive up beside the starbucks, login, do what I need to do for a few minutes and leave. Don't even need to go in and buy a coffee, lol.

I've been thinking about buying a netbook but because I have to have Win xp pro, the only model that I can find is the HP Mini 8.9" VIA C7-MULV PROCESSOR(2133F) 160GB 2GB SDRAM DDR2 WITH 6 CELL BAT. AT BESTBUY FOR $599.00 Is this thing worth the money or are there any better choices ? The reviews didn't seem to be very favourable.

Please help.

I am planning to buy an Acer Aspire 1g netbook with 8gb drive, from
Canada Computers. It is $305.

The 512M version is a bit cheaper, but it seems you have to completely
disassemble the thing in order to add memory.

Any comments?

I just bought the Acer Aspire One, with 1 GB RAM and 8GB RAmdisk. It is
a neat little thing, fast for web, words and spreadsheet.

It was $299 at Canada Computers. Funny enough, they had the 512M
version displayed at $299, kept the 1GB version in the back.

I was checking this unit out a few months ago at Staples and next to the MSI Wind and Acer Aspire One I thought it had to most appealing build design to it however I don't know what they were thinking putting a C7 processor in there. Make sure you get an Intel Atom processor as they are very energy efficient.

As for people buy the 512M versions of the Acer just bite the bullet and get the 1GB of ram instead. I read online somewhere you can't upgrade anyways because they use soldered on ram to keep production costs low. Besides you void your warranty I believe if you take apart your netbook too.
