About 15% in the USA. Add in trucks not sure.

But how much economic activity is associated with the transportation industries world wide?

A far greater percentage. Now add in the cost of replacing upgrading every vehicle not just in western nations but world wide. And the cost of the electric infrastructure to run it.

Still think I'm off base?
Yup.

Trump's attempt to bring back coal are also dead.

Trump is playing politics and has dropped Florida From the Offshore Drilling Plan.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/09/climate/trump-florida-offshore-drilling.html

The Trump administration said Tuesday it had ruled out drilling for oil and gas off the coast of Florida after strong opposition from the state’s Republican governor, Rick Scott.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke moved last week to allow new offshore oil and gas drilling in nearly all United States coastal waters, opening more than a billion acres in the Arctic, Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico to potential leases. The decision prompted an outcry from Republican and Democratic governors alike on both coasts.

“I support the governor’s position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver,” Mr. Zinke said in a statement after meeting Governor Scott in Florida. “I am removing Florida from consideration for any new oil and gas platforms.”

Mr. Zinke’s reversal underscored the deep unpopularity of a plan that would undo one of the environmental legacies of the Obama administration. But the administration’s proposal is also a signal that President Trump is not done rolling back environmental restrictions to bolster domestic energy production.

It is.

In fact, the U.S. is on track to become an energy superpower.
This is the biggest disappointment for Russia of a Trump administration. Russia’s economy is dependent on energy (70% of exports, 50% of GDP), Trump is a drill baby drill POTUS. This will not only make the ME much less important to the US (5.5m Jews aside) but will keep the Russians and Saudi’s hungry. That it’s pro growth is the cherry on top.

Not many electoral college votes or Senators for the GOP on the left coast. Given their massive energy usage and the exploration on the GULF it’s time to explore the West.

California will likely get the same exemption given to Florida. If not, why not? All the opposition to this proposal will have to do is remind people of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill.

This entire proposal is typical Trump. Every day, the guy is all over the map. One day oil, the next day libel laws, today an internet tax.

For now their emissions are up, and if you’ve ever had to breath the air in Beijing or Shanghai you’d believe it.

The last point is an opinion, one I’m not sure I share. I’m more confident Canada will be relegated to cutting down trees and strip mining dirty oil.
I have been to Beijing several times and Shanghai once. the air is deplorable. that does not change the fact that the Chinese are taking steps to try and reverse it. it will not happen overnight. The US is going in the opposite directing and the small steps the US is taking and the small successes the US is having is in spite of the GOP and Trump not because of either. The US is missing the biggest opportunity of many gerneartyions to get out ahead. Sad

Trucks are getting greener everyday. The response to Musk's new truck has been overwhelming and others are following. But you keep pretending that oil is the fuel of the future.

Actually it’s fracking that is having the biggest impact, shifting from Coal to NG for electricity production.

I also wouldn’t confuse plans with actual results: http://www.businessinsider.com/us-2015-renewable-energy-investments-2016-5

And Canada (speaking of sad)?

The West Course is also the tourist hub for states like California and Oregon. These States are vehemently opposed to this exploration, especially gives the recent fires, storms, flooding, and landslides.
This is all to do with politics, and no doubt there will be a lot of opposition to it. Trump should consult all the states prior to approval of this oil exploration. Where is the democracy gone??
