Spencer HaywoodWho am I?
In 1967-68, I attended Trinidad State Junior College, and averaged 28.2 points and 22.1 rebounds per game.
I won a Gold Medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics, and I am still the youngest American basketball player in Olympic History.
In my only season of NCAA Division I Basketball, I led the Nation in rebounding, (21.5), while scoring 32.1 points per game.
I was permitted to play professionally in the 1969-70 season because of a 'hardship exemption' introduced by the ABA; my mother was earning $2 per day picking cotton in Mississippi while raising 10 children. I was named both Rookie of the Year and MVP in the ABA after the 1969-70 season, my only season in that league.
I played for the Seattle Supersonics in the 1970-71 season, and I was subsequently drafted by the Buffalo Braves in the 2nd Round, (30th pick) of the 1971 NBA Draft.
Prior to the 1979-80 season, I was traded for a future Hall of Famer who would average better than 30 points scored per game in his first five seasons with his new team. I won my only NBA Championship ring in 1980, and my team waived me prior to the beginning of the next season.
