New Tires- Ontario vs NY State

A couple weeks ago someone started a thread about snow tires, where someone suggested tires were about 40% cheaper south of the border.

I'm well aware that car parts are generally cheaper, but wasn't aware that, that included tires. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Can anyone recommend a "tire guy" in Buffalo or Niagara Falls area?

if you go to a dealership or canadian tire then yes, you'll find tires cheaper in new york.
however if you call around the gta and go to a tire place it wont be much of a difference after the fuel, your time and paying taxes after the fact.

try calling brampton tire world or tires23 to get a quote.

If you drive to the US to buy and install winter tires, do you plan on leaving your summer (all-season) tires behind or bring them back with you? Or are you just going to pick up tires and bring them back, if so you may have to pay duty and tax as well. If you're going to have 2 sets of tires, it's best to have them on separate rims.

Was planning to drive there on the old tires, and back on the new tires, (leaving the old ones behind....). I already have a set of spare rims for my winter tires.

Well, who ever said 40% is wrong, the biggest difference is our taxes, other than that prices are close.

Just tried Tire rack...their $370.00 shipping cost put it $200.00 over a quote i already have. Plus i have to pay extra to get them installed.

try to get a quote from Tires on call at 647 527 8473 and they come to install in your place of preference. they have a van with all they equipments for tire installation and balancing

On the deals forums guys buy from Tire rack, Discount Tire Direct and Discount tires and have em shipped to an installer in buffalo.

A popular guy in buffalo for installs is Mike at 24 hour auto. No link but if you google you'll go to the deals link with his phone number.

Most people pay $70 to $80 US for install.

Even with the install fees, and declaring at customs and paying the taxes,the savings are still worth it to many.

Alright, check the prices on identical tires here and there then decide. It would have to be a substantial saving for me to drive to Buffalo for tires. QEW traffic, line-ups at the border, gas, time etc.

compared exact same tire/wheel package at tire rack

It came to 604 us + 115 shipping to buffalo. So $719 + installation + 13% tax once you cross the border. Assuming you get a killer deal and installation is 15 a wheel thats 60 installation + 93.47 taxes at the border for a grand total of $872.

Exact same size tires all installed with taxes in at tires 23 i got quoted $940.

So 72 dollars, subtract gas and your time and not worth it in my opinion. never mind the fact if you get a defective tire etc...

Avoid at all costs! He installed tires for me 3 years ago, and fucked up 2 of them. Contacted him, and he offered to send me the cost to remount them, but never did. Had to stop by. He's cheap, and does the work outside of a storage locker.

I was shopping around for a very expensive set of high performance tires back in the summer.

Just couldn't find a materially different price than what I had close to home.

I just bought snow tires on Costco.ca. I checked costco.com for comparison and the tires were $24 per tire cheaper in the US. Checked tirerack.com and they were a little cheaper than Costco, but shipping to a US address still ate up those savings. Minor savings over there which aren't worth a trip on their own. Perhaps if I wanted to do a lot of other shopping while there.
