Never got into Newsgroups.
Since torrent sites enable you to get anything your mind can imagine, what advantages do Newsgroups offer over torrents?

Newsgroups are not all downloads though as is it also used for mod channel and general discussions.
A good thing about newsgroups is that you don't need to share your connection (no upload in exchange) nor open any ports; and I have noticed that the streams used to download steel the bandwith to torrents when used on the same router...

There was a thread in the Lounge or maybe here in Technology, I believe awhile back where the best torrent sites for porn were listed.
Do a Terb search for it.
The Opera browser has the capability to download torrents directly.
On Opera you just Google what you want then add 'torrent' after in the search box (i.e. Diana Krall torrents) and Opera takes you to all kinds of sites to DL that specific type of torrent from.
Just did a Google on Diana Krall torrents and got 46,000 results using Opera.
The advantages of Newsgroups over torrents are many, but the determining factor for most people is the fact that there is a price to pay to access the newsgroups. I use both, but (IMHO) whoever says that Torrents are better does not know what they speak of. When it comes to content at least it's a no contest.
To the original poster: I don't know of any local newsgroups for Toronto (free, and with Binaries access which I assume is what you want) but I suggest giving Giganews a try. If you find the cost unbearable, or unreasonable then just split the costs with a friend, and get the unlimited access account.

Decided to dabble into Newsgroups.
That's OK with me. It gives me a chance to learn them further and see what they are all about.

Time Warner is what we have in WNY. Gave them a call and found out they still have free access to GigaNews here on the old Adelphia Homepage at (news.adelphia.net). Told the Time Warner techie I talked to, that I didn't know much about newsgroups and he was very helpful in setting me up and walking me through accessing them. After setup it took awhile to load their free 'available newsgroups', there were over 100,000 of them! While they are free to access, Time Warner has a 5 Gig/month download cap in place. If you want to just try it out first, you can go with news.astraweb.com which also sells it by pay per use with decent pricing. Use a provider along with www.binsearch.info

Nice porn pix are easy to find elsewhere, with www.xnxx.com being an excellent site for all the HQ pix you can imagine.
Been playing around in GigaNews a little bit using only Outlook Express.
Wish I had more time for this.
While there are over 100,000 groups, there are plenty of junk groups listed. Pix are easy to find but music and movies seem harder to find and download. Would another newsreader work better than the one Outlook Express uses? There is plenty of music listed, just having problems downloading it.

Got and installed Grabit and all I can say is WOW!
Very impressive.
Was amazed at the variety and choice of music available in newsgroups. Did a search in mp3s and picked the 'blues genre' mp3s and got over 4000 choices in GigaNews. Scrolled on through and came across an old Muddy Waters double album 'Fathers and Sons', I had bought in the 60's while in college. Still have that original vinyl 33&1/3 double album, so I downloaded it. Got the whole double album, 16 tracks plus 5 bonus tracks that were thrown in, in 6 minutes. DL speed varied from 200-400 kbps.
A couple buddies at work always said this was the way to go but just never took the time to check it out till now.
This is the way to do it, it's amazing and far better than p2p and torrents.
Newsgroups are a little, IMHO, trickier to learn than Kazaa, Limewire, torrents, etc., you have to go through a couple extra steps to learn and operate, but it's well worth the effort!
Plus in newsgroups anything and everthing you can imagine is available.
