Basically 1-7 get in as now.

Teams 8-15 play in a one game (no series) tournament - winner gets the eight seed.

I sort of like it - the guy on the fan says it makes the regular season less meaningless. But that is an absurd and inaccurate notion.

Actually makes the regular season more important, because there are no longer eight spots, but only seven spots available. As a team your fighting hard to avoid the tournament.

And I think the tournament round would actually be quite interesting due to its one and out nature.

The tournament allows everybody a feint hope, but you earned that low 1 in 8 chance because of your poor play in the regular season.

Kind off reminds me of the 2010 Olympics format. The top 4 teams get a bye to the quaters and teams 5-12 play a 1 game game playoff to advance. How would that effect the teams seeding in which who gets to pick first in the June draft. Let's say a team that finished the regular season in 15th place goes on to win the tournament and even makes the final 4 would that team still get a high draft pick or will they be seeded higher and get lower draft pick?

This will extend the season by at least a week. Hence this will cool down teams that have momentum going into the playoffs. You will have 7 rusty teams and one team which acquired momentum. I would go with 1-7 get in and 8-9 to fight for the last spot.

Stay with the current format. This is just another stupid idea of that idiot Bettman. The top 8 from each conference played their way in. I can recall when it was the top 16 1 vs 16 and so on.

I wonder which of the stupid idiots came up with this idea ? 15 of 16 make the playoffs now ? Ridiculous ! It definitely does render the regular season even more useless.
If they feel they absolutely have to change it and add more teams, I would go with Lovelat's suggestion or something close to it.

I agree....
I think the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" applies!!!

I guess the NHL wanted to give the players more opportunity to hit each other in the head.

This has nothing to do with improving the game, making things more exciting for the fans , or trying to do something to make games more meaningful, this is all about more games so teams get more money.

Playoffs are too long as they are, adding more games does not make them more exciting, it only tires out the players.

Better yet, why not make teams 8-15 compete in a shootout tournament complete with judging for artistic impression.

Absolutely ABSURD.

Better off letting the top team gets byes...like nfl..and the remaining 7..work their way thru.

If at the start of the season..you knew on the last game of the year...you could STILLL get into the playoffs...no matter what.....I would rest all my players as the season ended.....have everyone raring to go for the one game...THEY WIN..THEY ARE in.

aND EVERYONE KNOWS anyONE CAN WIN IN A ONE GAME FORMAT...JUST TAKES A HOT GOALIE!!!!
