This labour dispute isn't just player vs Owner ... It's the have teams vs the have not teams ... Get rid of a few teams and you will see lock outs and strikes be a non issue in the future . Supply vs Demand would result in player salaries being effected and you wouldn't have to create a labour aggrement which would help those teams who are bleeding in red .
I'd love to see contraction, but it ain't gonna happen so I don't see a need to contemplate, let alone discuss the prospect.

…BTW, the players play 100% only because the owners pay 100% of their salaries. No pay, no play, which is what we shall shortly see.…
Classic marketplace dealmaking. Each side has nothing without the other, and until they get together their customers have nothing either.

Actually I think contraction is on the table. I think management will use it as a hammer. Don't forget they still own Phoenix and the ownershop there is far from settled. There are other teams that are on shaky financial grounds so if push comes to shove contraction will at least be presented as an option.

Actually the owners still get the $200million this year from NBC, lockout or not (according to CTV NEWS). BTW: I noticed that Joe Tilley did the sports and not Sunil "Tell you all about it now" Joshi.

Something tells me that that $200 million will not be paid unless there is a season Rock. I would hazard a guess that there is a clause in that agreement addressing such an issue and barring that NBC would go to court over it.

FUCK Bettman, the players are willing to play under the old agreement until a new one is hammered out. This is how the American teams suffer in the smaller markets.

The Pheonix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightening will all lose less money.

maybe the leafs can make the playoffs after this lockout is resolved since they haven't made it in since the last one.

I don't see why they can't work under the current CBA until the get it done. This will be Bettman's second lock-out, he's the problem here.
All leagues learned their lesson from the 1994 MLB strike. If you start a season without a CBA in place, the players will strike once 3/4 of the games are played (and they've collected 3/4 of their salary) and the owners either cave-in or lose the playoffs - after paying out most of the regular season expenses.

Yes - the threat to reduce the labour force by 6.3% (assuming 2 teams are eliminated) will scare alot of players. The bottom 40 lose their jobs immediately, and any player in the bottom third talent-wise can expext to see his career shortened.
