Looks as though Gonchar and Niedermayer have some interest in Toronto. They obviously wouldnt get both of them, but I'd take either.

I heard Niedermayer is gonna sign with Philly. He's basically been working out and playing around in Philly with the Flyers players all this time.

McCarty

I think Pittsburgh would make a great fit for Darren McCarty...the Pens will need a top notch enforcer to look after Sidny Crosby/Malakin/Lemieux, etc.
McCarty does have a scoring touch every now and then, plus 3 Stanley Cup rings.
I saw McCarty's metal band in Toronto last spring. McCarty has put on a lot of weight, almost a biker type build. He will need to drop some pounds to be in game shape for a regular shift, but he could still keep the weight and be an enforcer only.

I heard McCarty won't be able to pass the stiff new drug enforcement screening program.

The latest rumour going around some of the hockey boards today is Toronto going after Peter "glass body" Forsberg. It looks unlikely that he`ll be back with Colorado since they`ve already committed to keeping Sakic and Blake, and apparently he`s good friends with Sundin and would definitely be willing to go to Toronto.

Personally, I think it would be a huge mistake JFJ signs him. I`ve always felt Forsberg was grossly overrated and it`s highly doubtful that he could last more than a couple of months without injuring himself.

he's a better player than sundin, though... and has less missed games due to injury then neiwendyk or roberts...

Forsberg grossly overrated?

When he isn't hurt, he's the best all round player in the game!

I've heard rumours that Forsberg will end up in Vancouver with fellow Swede Markus Naslund...

It would be awesome if Toronto got him, but I highly doubt they will. It would depend on how many players they buy out, and so far nothing. Also I dont think its wise to have 2 guys maxed out under the new cap...That gobbles up 40% of cap space with 2 players...

Reports on The Score, "Swedish newspaper Expresse reports that Peter Forsberg wants to play with Markus Naslund next year. Both have asked their North American agents to look into the option. Neither player is expected to be back with their respective teams in the NHL for the upcoming season"

Take this as you may - sounds like wishful Swedish thinking that both will play in Sweden next year which simply won't happen.

As for Toronto getting either or both - forget about it 1) not enough cap room 2) makes too much sense if Leafs want to win :p

Eklunds Blog! a.k.a. The National Enquirer of Hockey!

Actually, I used to find his site mildly interesting. Until last January/February when he went off the deep-end.

Anyways...

I'd like to know what the Blues are thinking. Commiting to Weight and Tkachuk AND now Pronger. That's over 20 million. More than half the cap.

Boggles my mind.

Especially since Tkachuk is pretty much useless at playoff time every year.

Actually, I just remembered something else. The Blues have also publicly stated that they have set their own team salary cap to 30 million. So Tkachuk, Weight, and Pronger are going to potentially take up 2/3rds. Yeah, good luck with that!

hammertm,

I don't think you payed enough attention to the abovementioned post by yesguy.

when the business decision is based on increasing it's flexibility, the decision makes sense, but then again, I do agree with your point.

Turgeon is 36 years old and has only averaged ~15 goals and 45 points the last 3 seasons ('03-04 season - 76gp, 15g, 25a, for 40 points. 4.5 million dollar material? I don't think so). Of course he's had some nagging injuries, but nothing that kept him from playing in at least 60 games during the last 3 seasons. In todays NHL, paying him 4.5 million just isn't very sound business stragedy. The salary line separating the 'elite' and the 'potentially elite' from the 'regular' players I would say will settle around the mid-4 million dollar mark. Turgeon just isn't worth it to pay him 4.5 million in the new and improved NHL. Maybe if he was a fantastic checking forward (Lehtinen, for example), maybe....

Moving on...I'd LOVE to see Miroslav Satan move from Buffalo and go to the Devils. That just seems right. In a perfect world the NHL will waive the 2 digit limitation on jersey numbers and allow him to wear 666, but switching to 13 will be the next obvious choice.

I'll tell you right now, I'm not a fan of Satan or the Devils, but I'm buying that jersey.

edit. oops, for some reason I thought Satan wore 13 with the Sabres. He wears 81. Me be dumb today.

Dallas has a winning team as they stand now, but of course 4 decent players to replace Turgeon would be nice. Just sucks that you have to empty $2.97 out of the teams pocket to do so.
The owners knew this was coming about 5 years ago. Its Dallas' fault for signing him for so long at that kind or money....
