The Green Shift is tried and proven in several European countries like Sweden. It has proven successful. I know many people who would benifit from the income tax breaks that come with it.

Our banks are much more regulated than the US banks or most other world banks. Governments of Canada or our provincial governments can do nothing about the world economy, what we can do is prepare for economic downturns. Having a 13 Billion dollar buffer zone and a 3 billion dollar emergency fund would have been great. It looks like Harper's government pissed it all away.

The time to go green is now. If Canada can become one of the leaders in eco products this will mean we do not have to import this technology or products. It means that we can buy Canadian and export it. Even if you one of the people who does not believe in the climate change the rest of the world does and there is a market for it.

We can not just tread water here we must always look and prepare for the future. Unfortunately none of the parties really seem to be looking too far ahead. They are just looking to get elected anyway they can. Then once in power they wish to hold on to power anyway they can. They have access to our tax dollars. Tax breaks for political gain or spending is pretty much the same. It means deficit.

Can anyone tell me where the 12 billion dollars that we had in the bank went.

I've asked the question many times in the last week and the silence is deafening. What did we get for $12 billion.

Can any of you Harper fans tell me? That's a shite load of cash. For what?
Great question. I know some went on the GST cuts. I really don't think we got much bang for our money. It seems to be Bush style economics

The bulk of it went to reducing the debt that was run up over the last 40 years.

The question is incorrect as the money was not a surplus it was over taxation that the liberals generally did when budgeting. A surplus would be the result of carefull managment and money control. That never happened

He gave about $5B to Quebec to fix the so-called fiscal imbalance. The rest was squandered on the GST cut.

....The Liberals' grand "plan" was always more eyewash than substance. It, too, was based on excessively optimistic growth assumptions, and these have now gone bye-bye. The notion of speeding up infrastructure projects to inject fast money into the economy mostly can't be done, since projects take a long time to be planned - but if done will almost certainly lead to cost overruns and mistakes made in haste.

The Conservatives brag about being good stewards of the economy, but they haven't been. They inherited a big surplus, and spent most of it on two of the least useful things a federal government could do to improve productivity and competitiveness: They gave billions to the provinces, for which they got no thanks, and sliced the GST by two points.

They also ran down the cushion of the contingency fund, so as the effects of the downdraft become apparent, the government will be heading for a deficit, something the Conservatives are pledged to avoid.

Did anyone see a difference when the GST was cut by 2%, I didn't. Movies cost the same, gas went up; anything that had the GST priced into it stayed the same. I didn't feel a great saving making me want to go out and spend some more.

Just like when they tackled the problem of air pollution on their 'redo' of their environmental plan, and tackled toxins in PAINT, approximately 1% of the shite that in the air. Why? It was easy and it made them look like they were doing something. Wouldn't want to try and tackle bigger source, would we? The big oil and gas companies might get upset.
You save a few pennies that is about it unless you are buying a big ticket item. I would have much better liked to see them keep paying down the debt. Canada saw it's first deficit early this year. I think with the extra tax money that is brought in by the higher gas prices we should see a small surplus this year. Perhaps the reason why we are having this early election call is so the Conservatives can get in again before we see just how truly bad they have screwed up the economy.

To a person from Alberta the oil and gas companies are untouchable.
