Anyone have any ideas what Blu-Ray player is worth buying now? My main concern is upscaling to 1080p and with the best quality. The other is the profile for 1.1 or 2.0(coming out soon).

There are still many problems with players where they do not play all discs and you are forced to do firmware upgrades every month.

PS3 is the way to go.

1) Futureproof through firmware updates
2) Generally considered the best performing, fastest loading BR player. Upconverting is excellent
3) Gaming ability is a bonus

I am not a real big fan of the PS3s at the moment considering they have had shoddy laser component for years. I used to known 2 PS2s previously and although good for gaming, I don't think that the PS3 fairs better than a standalone unit when it comes to electronic components.

this is a joke, blu ray is too overpriced
We all know that Blu-ray is overpriced, now that that format war is over. Sony is going to take us to the cleaners when it comes wto highly rated releases of movies. A big "Monopoly" you see, just like Windows.

I don't know what you're talking about, but the failure rate so far is supposed to be like .5% to 3%.

2wheel.....Suit yourself but the PS3s have been getting rave reviews as Blu-Ray players.

Also Sony does not have a monopoly on BluRay hardware or software.

Not sure about that... I never had a problem with my PS2 (still using it). I haven't heard any issues from any of my friends with the PS3. Although a lot of cursing from Xbox 360 owners. I guess they still haven't fixed the overheating problems. MS is too busy trying to buy Yahoo.

I've got a PS2 and PS3....never had any problems, except that the PS2 has been a paper weight for the last year since getting the PS3....it's awesome!

I guess that I am one of the lucky ones with my 360 as I have had no issues with mine. The PS2 on the other hand I have had 4 laser burnouts with the PS2 V11 and V12s, so it has become a paper weight in the least.

the PS3 is easily one of the best blu ray players out there, add on to that it upscales standard def dvd's, plays video games, has an internet browser, can stream video content from your pc via wi-fi etc etc it is an awesome machine definitely worth the price.

As for blu ray anyone who says they arent any different or overpriced, well buy them at AMAZON.COM and take a look at Black Hawk Down or the latest Die Hard movie and tell me there is no difference with standard def dvds.

I've got both a PS2 and PS3 and have had great experiences watching BR's on the PS3. Even regualar def dvd's come out looking really good through the PS3.

My bigger problem is that I also have a Toshibab HD-DVD player. Not sure what to do with it. Is it possible to build a decent library with what has already been produced? I'm assuming that the price's will drop significantly. I understand that they will discontinue production of HD-DVD's but does anyone know up to this point how many movies have been made in the HD-DVD format.

One last question - can you get a remote for the PS3 instead of using the controller to play movies?

HD-DVD will still have all the slated releases from WB upto May so there will be some interesting titles to be had, there really is not a ton of software that is worth collecting in my opinion. your HD-DVD player will still be a kick ass upconverting DVD player with HDMI support, and if you got the unit as one of the promotions it was not any more expensive than a upconverting dvd only unit.

PS3 is an awesome BD player and I will continue to use mine unitl I can get a player that is Profile 2.0 compliant. There really are not that many upgrades on the PS3 and it certainly is not every couple of weeks, more like every 3 or 4 mounths. It is your safest bet for technology and price at this point. The nice part about BD group is that there are many manufactures beyond sony like: Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic, philips, LG .... This is a situation that is much more geared towards price reductions than the monopoly Toshiba had on HD-DVD Hardware. BD is more advanced and it will take more time to recoup R&D Costs but in terms of the price curve BD is way cheaper than even DVD was after a year into the format so it bodes well for the future.

*note, HD-DVD cheaper players where the ones selling for 199 ect, but the better player (1080P Model) was very close to the price of BD players (around 399). so be sure you are comparing apples to apples.

I for one am glad the BD won out it is actually a way bigger consortum in terms of CE support. BD has more capasity, better encryption for studios and can push through much more data (bandwith). HD-DVD was already seeing the limits of it's technology as it had to increase compression just to fit regular length movies on a single disc (and forget about the extra features). With only one studio (Paramount) left to support BD (announcement is on it's way). It is now a very easy decision for consumers. Now that studios can concentrate on one format for development and mass produce without the overhead of 2 formats the end result will be lower prices for both hardware and software.

this is a great day for HD Optical disc's and consumers.

BR won. But for hardware and BR flicks, I'd still wait.

Once the the BR DVD players hit the sub 200 CAD mark, and 20 CAD for BR flicks, I shall then part with my money for things BR. In the mean time I'll stay with my up converting player.

Too bad I don't game much, otherwise as said PS3 would have been a good option for going BR like now.

keep the HD DVD it is still a really good player like you said for your collection and as an upscaling regular dvds and yes the PS3 does have a remote on its own, you can pick it up around 25 bucks or even less, the trouble with the PS3 is that you cant use a universal remote on it since its blue tooth technology only, and the remote's buttons dont have glow in the dark function as some of us have dark home theatres and have to turn on the lights to see the buttons.

I know - it sucks. I have a Logitech Harmony remote that can control everything I have except the PS3. Shit - I can even dim my lights and turn on the fireplace with this remote....just cant control the PS3. Any other options or do I have to still get off the couch, get the PS3 remote, and turn it on manually?

Might almost be worth it buying a HD player just for the upconverting, at least if retailers start dumping them.
