All these arguments are academic. If people used good judgement and common sense it wouldn't be necessary to filter the offensive words in the first place. It's amazing the things people think they can get away with if they are posting anonymously on a forum such as this one. As a rule of thumb if you think something you are about to post would not be acceptable in front of a live audience then perhaps you should consider not posting it.

Everyone sing along

Now the portions of a woman that appeal to man’s depravity
Are fashioned with considerable care
And what at first appears to be a simple little cavity
Is really an elaborate affair
Now the surgeons who have studied these effeminine* phenomena
By numerous experiments on dames
Have taken all the items of the feminine abdomina*
And given them delightful little names

There’s the vulva, the vagina and the good old perinina*
And the hymen, which is rarely found in brides
There’s a lot of little gadgets, you would love ‘em if you knew ‘em
The clitoris and Lord knows what besides
What a pity it is then when we common people chatter
Of those mysteries to which I have referred
We use for such a delicate and complicated matter
Such a very short and unattractive word

Now the erudite authorities who study the geography
Of that obscure but entertaining land
Are able to indulge a taste for intricate topography
And view those tasty details close at hand
But ordinary people, though aware of their existence
And complexities beyond the public know
Are normally contented to view them from a distance
And to treat them, roughly speaking, as a show

When therefore all we laymen probe the secrets of virginity
The language that we use is somewhat blunt
And we don’t becloud the issue with meticulous Latinity
But call the whole concern a simple c u n t
For men have made this useful and intelligent commodity
The topic of a bawdy joke and gibe
Yet though the name they call it is somewhat of an oddity
It seems to fit the subject they describe

Actually what i think is amazing is how picky people can be when I am sure there are much more important things to be worried about.
As I said before just because the word is replaced by stars it doesn't cange the fact that it was said.
I think people around here need to grow up a bit, seriously.
I can't imagine being such a prude that if I was offended by seeing the actual word c.unt that i would write to you and complain that it should be filtered. Do you people not have lives?
After all it is just as you said, this board is for all intents and purposes anonnymous. I find it absolutley silly that someone could be so offeneded by some anonnymous person using the words c.unt or as.shole, whether it be in a derogatory fashion or not.

I could stomp my feet and cry like a little baby about a lot of stuff that goes on here or many other places on the net, and the real world for that matter, but to tell you the truth I have more important things to worry about than whether my eyes or ears were subjected to a little profanity by someone I don't even know.

That's the point we are trying to drive home. Some of us ARE offended by those words , it doesn't mean we are silly or that by so doing we lose sight of "more important" things. Simply put, some of us don't feel we have to be put up with insensitive or offensive people whether it's ofline or not. Everyone is a different.

This is a valid point, but it has nothing to do with asterisks.

People can be just a f***ing offensive using asterisks as they can without.

at the risk of sounding redundant ...

I hate to be the voice of "unreason", but censorship is not dealing with the problem. It is burying it.

Could someone please explain to me why this word "c*nt " is taken as so derogatory. Is it because it's defining women by their genitals? I'm honestly perplexed. If you call a guy a "dick", it just means he's an asshole. I would have thought "bitch" would be the equivalent of "c*nt, if people do, in fact, perceive "c*nt " as gender specific. ( just curious- I'm in no way saying it's acceptable with it's perceived context )

I tend to use the term most if I bang my head on the kitchen cupboard or something to that effect.

Vanessa makes a good point with regard to desensitisation. We can become desensitised with constant exposure to things. I think it is up to us to maintain our awareness though. Ignorance does perpetuate ignorance, but it also maintains and spawns an awareness level for those who prefer to learn and understand. Just like this thread.

I feel that if we are to truly respect each other [ as males and females ] on the same level then appeasing each other is not the route to go. I'd like to think I can give people more credit than wishing to be spoon fed.

This all comes close to that old Politically Correct syndrome. For the most part I will not use terms that offend others racially or otherwise. When I look at it from my own perspective though I'm not so sure I'd want to be appeased. It feels somewhat patronising. Many people do adhere to others wishes out of respect, but it also perpetuates a negativity among many who feel they are just being unjustly proud and overly sensitive. The recent case of many Asians not liking the term Oriental is a good example of this.

I have a different question...

pool said:

I'll accept that the "c-word" is not appreciated by many of the readers on this board. I agree that, when it is used, it usually is meant in a very insulting way. My response is avoid using this word in an offensive manner, out of respect for those who do not appreciate it or find it hurtful.

What I don't understand, is why it is so important (or even appropriate) to "deal" with this problem by "asterisking"-out the word. In my view, this does nothing to solve the problem of abusive posting. If anything, it may actually make some users more inclined to use the word because they know it will be bleeped.

After all, whether I write cunt, c**t, or **** everybody knows exactly what was meant and the insult (if that was intended) still gets through.

To me, blocking an offensive word seems more like hiding from the problem than dealing with it.

I already answered your question. By filtering the word you are merely sending a message to the poster that they should not post offensive words on the site. If they persist, you then deal with the
source of the problem [the poster].

hehe ... you never did like the big picture, huh Fred. The poster and the word are only symptoms of the problem. ( whichever problem it may be, depending on the case in question )

It's like suppressing a cold. It may stop the sneezing and ease a sore throat, but doesn't get rid of the germ.

Racism, misogyny and other negative judgemental outlooks are like cancers to society. This board is a reflection of that society and maybe to an extent, vice versa.

Pool's making the same point I made 2-3 screens ago. Why is c**t more offensive than d**k? Is it because d**k has been used more frequently than c**t? Why should men not take offense to being called a d**k? C**t & d**k are equivalent in my eyes only referring to different organs.

The meaning is different. "Dick" is a much milder form of insult than is usually implied by the word "cunt".

If a guy is pushing ahead of you in line or talking during a movie at the theatre then you might call him a "dick". If a woman did the same thing, you might call her a "bitch" (for example) but I doubt that the stronger term "cunt" would apply. If the same man cheated on his partner and stole her house and savings, you'd probably find a stronger insult to define him.

Even though the root meaning of each term is slang for a form of genetalia, usage has determined that the "C" word has a stronger meaning than the "D" word.

Seven words you cant say on television...

sometimes, just sometimes, I remember George Carlin commenting on this subject and chuckle. :)

Time to go off to Amazon and buy up all the Sam Kinison and George Carlin DVDs possible before someone tries to ban them for being insensitive.

Because we think in language, the quality of our language relates to our quality of thought. There is no end of groups who want to tell you what to think and not think.
