OK need help with network

burt-oh-my!

I have two computers, DSL line goes to a wireless router, laptop connects just fine, internet works great etc. I also have a desktop computer, and that is where the problem is.

Now I started out with the desktop computer connected to the router via a network cable, then I tried via a wireless USB device, in BOTH cases:

I use a shared-database type program, where the database in stored on the desktop computer. That program works FINE with both the network cable connection and the wireless, meaning that the desktop is using the router just fine, for that purpose. So its not as though there is no connection on the part of the desktop to the router. However, and this is what just completely baffles me, I cannot get the internet to work on the desktop computer, even though the icon at the bottom right of my screen says that I am connected to the wireless network. So the desktop is sending information through the router to the laptop no problem, the laptop uses that same router to get internet just fine, but the friggin desktop will NOT get the internet. I have tried both Firefox and IE, I get in Firefox the "Looking for " etc message.

Any help appreciated. The fact that it STILL doesn't work with my new wireless router connection indicates to me that I didn't need to buy the wireless USB device for my desktop - the problem lies elsewhere. I guess I just bought it to try something different. I suppose my reasoning was better to spend $60 on a USB wireless thing than $100 bucks or whatever to get a guy in to fix it.

I have connected to the wireless network, entered the key, then the thing says "Acquiring network something or other, then it says OK. I also on the desktop get a message saying I have an IP address.
