Your place!!
I have a kid going to school in the US and was thinking of getting her a car.
Called the insurance company here and told them what I wanted to do, let her take the wifes down, they freeked, said that it wouldn't work as she would then be a full time driver not part time and because it was in the US premium would be crazy. Not an option.
Next plan, buy her some thing down there and insure it with someone there. Cars are cheap there, can get a 2002 or 03 Grand Am or Alero for under 3000. Question, does she have to get a US drivers liscence to do this.
Anyone have any experience with this.

Hmm interesting question. At first thought I'd say no, you don't need to be a US citizen to own or insure a driver in the US but you WILL need a US address.

Here's the link to the DOT's by state. Since each state has their own specific criteria I'd suggest you look there.

I find it (once again) funny how people come here looking for answers when they can find it on the net easy enough.

In general no she shouldn't given that a) she's a student b) she does not intend to make that particular U.S. state her permanent residence (even if she's thinking about doing so after she graduates, this is "the answer") c) in general your drivers license has to be from the State or Province you consider your domicile, your vehicle can be registered in another state where it is principally used (such as where you have a vacation home) but it can't be driven "home" and used there most of the year. I'm not sure, however, about the ramifications of bringing back across the border for the summer.

Actually, not entirely true. At the Nevada DOT (from the link I provided) if you want to purchase a vehicle and drive it in the state you are residing, you have to surrender your licence from your home state and get one from the one you're currently living in.

Since the subject in question is going to be there for the majority of the year, but she's from out of country, rules may be different.

So, what state is she going to be schooled in? Seems we have all the info but that......

I don't know whether Nevada conforms to the General U.S. rule but normally students are exempted from the rule you quote above. Similarly so is someone who for instance lives in Connecticut but has vacation home in Vermont they can probably legally register a vehicle in Vermont, but they can’t then drive it back to Connecticut where they live 11 months of the year and use it there for those 11 months - they would have to register it in Connecticut. As I mentioned these are general rules and I'm sure there are exceptions.

Give GIECO a call or PM DQ he might be able to direct you to an agent.

Finally got a Chance to check out Geico for insurance and they were pretty cheap in my estimation, about $1600 US for a year on a 2002 Grand Am 4 cyl. Full coverage. That's a student rate of some kind.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
