Old Men In Malls

As I wander aimlessly around Toronto, I notice the unusually large number of old men who sit on benches in covered malls. Most of them are there 24/7. They don't actually do any shopping, they just hang out with other old men. I can only assume that they got fed up sitting on their porches and decided to hang out at the mall (air conditioned in Summer and heated in Winter) instead:cool:.

Sometimes I notice some of them trying to chat up young ladies.

One of them goes by the handle "zardoz". True story.

Maybe their wives tossed them out of the house and they have nowhere else to go.

My 43 year old friend who doesn't work (lives off his inheritence) goes to Scarborough Town Centre everyday. Picks up his free Toronto Star and hangs out with 85 year old men (who also don't work) who try to set him up with their spinster fat granddaughters.

Next time you're at the mall and see one of these old men, why don't you start a conversation with them. Buy them a coffee. Maybe you can learn from their wisdoms about life. Maybe they will share with you their happinesses, triumphs and tragedies. Look past the wrinkles and see what is inside.

I mainly see most of them hanging around in groups, usually within their own race in food courts. Some really dress for the occasion, cute as hell.

This is what happens when you reach an advanced age and you have no money. You're options are limited. Who wants to stay at home with an 80 year old wife? Many are widowers as well and want some form of communication with others. And lastly, many are newcomers who have been sponsored by their kids, and are now collecting an Old Age Security Check from your tax dollars

A fair number more than you probably believe, likewise those who have spouses who have had to be institutionalized. They want to have some human contact and not stay in their house or apartment all day. Same reason a number of those who can continue to work even if they don't have to economically.

Some also come because they can walk around without fear of the weather or wet or icy pavement.

Only enough time to realize that there is no room for a hurried shopper like me to take a bit of a rest break to sit down because the "old men in malls" have taken all the seats.

Why such a fascination with old people, and where they sit ? ;)
