Why such a fascination with old people, and where they sit ?
Because they are taking up space so I have no room to sit. Bear in mind, they don't actually do any shopping. Have you ever gone into a mall washroom only to find that it is full of old men and you don't have a pot to pee in?

When it comes to judging said old men in malls in the cultural terms of 2010: also notice their lack of cellphones, et al.

So true, no cellphones, no MP3's and no laptops. They communicate the old fashion way in the language of the "old country".

YAH! Lets talk MORE about shopping babes that need sugar daddys to support their habit.

As I wander aimlessly around Toronto, I notice the unusually large number of old men who sit on benches in covered malls. Most of them are there 24/7. They don't actually do any shopping, they just hang out with other old men. I can only assume that they got fed up sitting on their porches and decided to hang out at the mall (air conditioned in Summer and heated in Winter) instead:cool:.

Sometimes I notice some of them trying to chat up young ladies.
Covered malls ... as opposed to ?

I read somewhere that one reason that new mall at Lawrence & Don Mills is open air is to prevent old folks hanging out in there in the winter as a number of retirement buildings are nearby. When the mall opened I went to check it out and thought it interesting as it reminded me of shopping areas in Florida - although we don't get snow down here. I thought "Why open air when so much of the year (including lead up to Christmas) is cold?". Then I read that the developers feared old men in the mall would take over if it wasn't open air.

YES. The Don Mills shopping plaza WAS a retirment home. I swear you go during the week & loaded with all the old folks hanging around. Went a few times & seemed like there was always an ambulance there to cart one of them off.

They are just sitting there waiting for things like the G8 summit, then they put on black body suits and go ninja cop cars and set them on fire!

Many are likely retired with little money or not many family members around to interact with. The mall provides interaction and entertainment for free, so it makes sense. As for chatting up the young ladies, that's just natural instict for a man to want to talk to a pretty lady. Men are born with an unavoidable desire to pursue women.

EXACTLY!!!
They PAID INTO THE SYSTEM all their working lives and are now collecting on it!
Good on them!....
What an extremely odd and depressing perspective........that sitting around a covered shopping mall is "collecting from the system"......that one works and pays into a system with this is the reward to look forward to...... wow

I don't know what to say other than I hope I have something else more enjoyable to do in my waning years. Surely most of the elderly deserve better than this. This is such a sad way to look at things I just have to shake my head and walk away

Mall vs Plaza

Covered malls are safe sex malls, as opposed to bareback malls. Just kidding! Covered malls (with roof) instead of strip malls (no roof).
I always thought it was ...
mall = covered shopping center
plaza = outdoor(uncovered) shopping center

It is sad in a way that they did this to discourage old men from hanging out in the mall. BTW: I don't see too many old women hanging out in malls.

I am not surprised since malls with lots of old men/women hanging around= less young people hanging around & spending money. Old people do not spend the money on the fashions sold in malls. Young ladies do & I would like to see MORE slutty ginas addicted to shopping hanging in malls.
