Men died building the Montreal Olympic stadium as well. Two, as I recall. Men died building the CN Tower. Men died building the national railway.

It's a tragedy but it happens and it ain't unique to the Chinese.

As for the closing ceremony, I didn't enjoy it as much as the opening. And you still can't beat Barcelona for lighting the flame.

I agree.

I'm not saying work related deaths don't happen here. When I said I wondered how many men died building their facilities it was to make the point that at least here much more stringent steps are taken to eliminate or control the hazards in construction... and deaths aren't covered up to save face.

Please provide support material to back up your point that not enough "stringent steps are taken to eliminate or control the hazards in construction".

With you claiming yourself an expert of china, please share that with us.

Hey dajodo, 12 people have died now from listeriosis. Some food safetey we have here in Canada eh.

You've been posting shit about China since the olympics began. It's fucking pathetic. What's your agenda?

If you're school age it's possibly understandable, otherwise you're just xenophobic wasp scum. And don't try and play the PC card cos I'm whiter than you so I can call you what the fuck I like.

I am a huge fan of China. See my previous post on this subject. However one needn't find back up for these claims. Look at the "modern" schools that were completely demolished by the earthquake in Sichuan Province. One need only visit downtown Beijing or Shanghaio to see bamboo scaffolding that is clearly woblly to know that standards are looser.

I again say "so what" though. It is a developing country and they have a gazillion things to try to fix. Given how nascent their efforts are they should be applauded for what they have accomplished.

I read one student's comment: "I hope that people don't get the impression that all of China is developed. What they have seen on the Olympics is only part of the country". I share the same concern. Too many people haven't seen the crappy, middle-ages factories that churn out pollutants as well as the cheap producst we are all jonesing for. We are as responsible for the environmental and safety problems in China as the government. We have outsourced the shittiest jobs that noone here wants, and the worst polluting industries. And now we blame them for not adoptin Kyoto.
