I am thinking of buying a digital camera, (Canon digital rebel) Can anyone tell me if anything new is on the horizon (like a 10 megapix camera) since the middle end cams are already 8 megapix. I am affraid they will come out with something better just as I buy my camera.

Each raw pic will be 30 MB. Is that something you want to deal with?

I bought my Rebel when they were in their hey day and had to order it to get it, the good news was it dropped $100. bucks between when I ordered and when it arrived. So I spent the hundred on accessories.

You won't be sorry with the quality, but make sure you have the spare battery and spare memory cards, and nothing below 256 it just usn't worth the bother. Minimum 512 preferable 1 gig.

The RAW pics are big but one of the great things with the Rebel is that you can preset different settings for various point and shoot scenerios. Personally I use mostly the large and medium settings dependent on where the pic is going to be used.

Just go ahead and buy what will suit your needs, preferences and budget. Don't worry what will be released after you buy your camera. I bought a Kodak DX 6340, and they came our with a DX 6440 (higher pixels) and, guess what, my DX 6340 works just fine, thank you. Trying to keep up with the technological 'developments' just doesn't make sense.

As they used to say in the old darkroom days, many happy developments!

Unless you have them already, remember that you need a compatable lens or lenses for the Rebel and all SLR Digital cameras. And once you get one, you'll want more... :)

Quick question...Is this your first SLR? I ask, becuase if you're coming from having just "point and shoot" cameras there is quite a bit of difference in how they function.

I have as a back up the first Rebel 300D and its a great camera. The new Digital Rebel has gotten some pretty great reviews.

If this is your first Digital SLR...stay with the Rebel. There will be some good deals in the not to distant future as people dunp the 10D and 20D models for the new 5D available in October.

Howver, getting the Rebel still has virtually the same sensor as the used 10 and 20D models with a full guarnatee. It's also a great camera for learning on. Buy the best entry level camera and then spend your money on good lenses. The lens will always go from one camera to the next. There are some EF-X Canon lenses that have to be used on certain models but thats the only exception. The Rebel kit comes with an 18-55 EF-X.

With few exceptions most of the 1D, 10D and 20D are a cropped sensor and anywhere from 6.8 to 12 megapixels.

Thge new 5D is full frame and 11.6.

If all of the above means nothing to you....you definetly should stay with the Rebel Kit!!

It's not about pixels

It's not about pixels. It's about what you will want to do with the camera. And yes, both Canon and Nikon are coming out with new models. Nikon is about to announce a WiFi camera that transfers your pix to the computer via wireless...Canon has a new high end coming out-- the EOS5D.

This is a good review site:

BTW: I still use mostly my Canon G2. Four megapixels. I make 8x10 prints and crop with no problem. Check out my page:

way out in left field
A couple of advice/questions for you:

1) what is your budget? Hasselblad is/has a 22 MP camera, that's TWENTY TWO MEGAPIXELS....but you're going to need a nice wallet to buy it. Last one I looked at was 12 MP and it was $12,000.00 CDN.

2) What are you using it for?

If you're using it for snapshots, sporting events, etc. nothing going to print (as in magazine/billboards/catalogues) you will never need anything more than 8 mp. (unless of course you are planning on eventually blowing it up to something like a 24" x 36" print).

In the case of digital SLR's and SLR's in general (I have a complete canon 35 MM outfit that I paid a total of $3500.00 for 10 yrs ago that is only worth $400.00 now) is that they are bulky and the lens' etc take up a lot of room. Equipped with a 400 mm lens, motor drive etc my camera weighs in at about 10 lbs. This is no good for horseback riding up through the mountains in Puerto Vallharta. The complete outfit in the aluminum case probably weighs in at 20 lbs. Get's to be a pain carrying it around.

There are many point and shoot cameras out there that have accessory clip on lens' that will increase the focal lenght and allow either wide angle, or higher optical zooms (another important factor in selecting a camera or lens. The higher the optical zoom the better).

Unless you are really serious about photography and are getting one for an artistic purpose, don't bother with the digital SLRs. You can get the same quality, with some optional lens' in a much smaller package.

Can you give an example... I was more or less looking at a 20d since the quality if pretty fricking irrefutable. I would love something more portable and of the same quality for "general usage".

The big difference from a user's POV is that pretty well all point and shoots have a slight delay between the time that you press the shutter and the actual exposure. This drives some people nuts. But one can learn to compensate by pressign the shutter half-way before actually exposing.

There is a documentary photographer, Alex Majoli, who uses P+S cameras all the time for award winning work.

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-6468-7844

He uses various Olympus models. See the above link.

I bought my G2 when they were around grand, I also have a Minolta G400 that I occasionally use. But the G2 is my work horse. It has focus assist -- that little beam that helps focus in low light and a hot shoe and an excellent rotating LCD screen. It is somewhat bulkier than the tiny Sonys and others but it has a lot of easily accessible features. That series is now up to G6. They are all the same except the later models have longer zooms and more pixels.

All except one shot on my web page (see above post) was taken with the G2. The one that was not I took with a 3.2 pixel Kodak. I sold it because it had no focus assist.

If I upgrade, I would probably buy a 20D with a fixed (non-zoom) lens for portraits. I am waiting until it drops in price. Or, I may hold out for somethinbg with a full 35mm size sensor.

And then there is the Leica Digilux... but the post would be too long.

So, is this a sex board or what? I apologize to those who don't take pix . .

Are you serious? And the worse thing is that you can't tell the difference between that and a simple 4 MB pic.

Another major difference is digital noise. Point-and-shoots cannot come close to SLR's in this category. I have a 20D for my serious stuff and I love it, but I still get lots of use out of my point-and-shoot G2. Again, all depends what you want it for. If you're never going to print anything above 8x10's, then anything above a 5 mpx will be a waste of money. But for serious photography, with the ability to print huge glossies, you'll be astounded at what the 20D can do -- or the Rebel for that matter...

No matter what -- enjoy ! :)
