TORONTO -- Miss Universe has been deemed too tasteless to open a culinary festival celebrating the Tastes of Thailand.

Officials with the City of Toronto banned the hometown beauty from opening a Thai festival on the weekend, citing a city bylaw that bans activities deemed degrading to men or women through sexual stereotyping.

"It was like a knife in the heart," 23-year-old Natalie Glebova said of the ban that kept her from appearing at the food fair.

"It seemed so silly. Everywhere else, I get great reaction from political leaders. But my hometown?"

A city spokesman said bureaucrats were only enforcing the rules. Organizers of the Tastes of Thailand festival decided there was little point in having Glebova open their festival without her sash and tiara - or even a reference to Miss Universe.

Nor did they relish having to call her - as the bylaw dictates - "an individual of note contributing to our community."

Weren't these the same morons who prevented the Bare Naked Ladies from playing at a big event in Nathan Phillips Square years ago, when Barabara Hall was mayor and the band hadn't hit it big? Seems the band's name was deemed to be offensive to women. I think they later apologized over that one when it became obvious how tame the band was.

Forget about the friggin by-laws & start celebrating our city. She gives us world-wide media attention that we desperately crave for & she gets this kind of treatment from what she proudly calls Toronto/Canada home.

I was listening to Q107 a while ago and apparently Miller has come out and said that this bylaw is out dated and definitely shouldn't apply to Miss Universe.

I guess old dave pulled his finger out of his ass and stuck it into the political wind storm to see which way the wind was blowing and has decided that more people think that this is dumb than support it, so he has come down on that side.

No word on whether miss U will still do the Thai thing.

I remember about 25 years ago there was a big brouhaha in Washington D.C. about the Beach Boys being banned from playing the 4th of July celebrations because the US Secretary of State, I think - forget his name, deemed them to be the "wrong element". The Beach Boys? You can't get any more innocent white-bread than the BBs. There was such a public backlash against that moron that eventually Reagan himself had to step in and do damage control and let them play.
