Right here. But wish I was there!

the problem is canada hasn't built a new refienery in more then 25 years
And that's because, believe it or not, there's not enough profit incentive for the oil companies to invest the dollars needed to build one. Pure economics.

So much for those who believe the oil refiners are giant money machines. If the profit was there, those companies would be building refineries like mad.

But of course 140kph on the 401 and 80 in city 60 zones is their god-given right!
The only way to end a post complaining about whiners? Whine, of course. Would you like some cheese?

Right on Papi.

I remember paying upwards of $1.35-$1.40 a litre in my travels last summer through the maritimes. Torontonians squell when it gets over 85 cents!!

Maybe they should just drive less and slow down. That would reduce their gas bill. But of course 140kph on the 401 and 80 in city 60 zones is their god-given right!
Keep in mind, living in Toronto isn't exactly cheap as it is, let alone us complaining about gas prices over 80¢.

Great idea, who needs gas anyway? Who needs to go to work, buy groceries, take kids to the doctor...?
The point I'm trying to make is that if you want to make a point to the gas companies than make a really statement to all of them. If you read my post in it's entirely, I'm saying that in Toronto that there are people who don't need to drive and can take public transit. I never said that all people in Toronto shouldn't be driving.

Boycotting a different one every couple of days or for a week or two, only gives them offset business, as then they get the gravy on the days we boycott a different brand.
no I don't support rolling boycotts either. But in the end you're still giving gravy to the gas stations that are not boycotted.

The profit is there but it's much easier to make truck loads of money on high gas prices which are supposedly due to a lack of refineries.

I know, but the fact is very few people actually have a real choice not to drive. Sure, I could take public transit to work, but that would add another 30 mins and $2 to my commute each way, meanwhile I'm still paying for my car anyway.

Doing laps at the Y
I drove less than 2 miles tonight, and the Esso at $.97.9 was 5 cents cheaper than the Sunoco(s) with both at $1.02.9

Price aside I am seeing more and more stations without gas available. Not just the Esso’s, Canadian Tires and Petros that are directly affected but the Shells and Sunoco’s. I asked the tenet at Sunoco he said that they are going threw gas so fast that they run out but only until a delivery.
What next are we going to be living a mad max movie?

For me the effects of the shortage are getting worse. In a stretch from Steeles/Warden to Steeles and Bathurst there are 5 Esso's all out of gas, 1 Sunoco and 2 Petro-Cans also tapped out. I finally got gas at Esso (Yonge & Steeles) but pumps were really slow. This is madness. It seems the only gas stations that haven't been affected are the Shell's.

EVERYBODY PANIC!

I've seen some empty stations, maybe 1 out of every 3 around my place. The price has gone up, but my last fill up actually cost me around the same. The local Sunoco had run out of Regular so they were offering up Ultra 94 for Regular price. For once I didn't mind that my car takes higher octane gas. :)

One thing is for sure, higher gas prices don't bode well for the economy. Our sprawl only works when we can get around for a reasonable amount of money. Take that away and we're heading towards some rough times.

Even industry experts are calling this fiasco a "manufactured supply shortage." Remember Hurricane Katerina? Gas prices in S. Ontario shot up, and the explanation was that a lot our product came up via the U.S., and they were having refining problems.

This time ... Whoops! .... no product is coming up from the U.S., all our supply comes from local refineries, and one of them had a minor refining problem.

The refinery at Oakville was mothballed and taken out of commission around 1997 or thereabouts. Industry officials didn't want to spend the money to upgrade the facility and keep it operating. They reasoned that Ontario didn't need the added refining capability at any rate, as all our supply requirements could be met by existing facilities.

The supply of refined gasoline has been deliberately reduced. Now Big Oil is saying "hey ... the demand is greater than the supply, so we are justified in charging higher prices."

What a load of crap.

Why was the Shell refinery in Burlington / Oakville closed many years ago?

IIRC there was an industrial accident there and someone was killed. The company was under alot of pressure to close the place by the rich residents of Oakville. It was mothballed, but is currently set to restart. A contractor friend has been there doing upgrades for the past year.

We should all be thankful for the gas companies doing such an unselfish job of rationing gas for us in these hard times of gas shortages. Everybody knows that the best way of rationing anything is by raising prices.
