I just discovered "Opera" browser - have been using Firefox mostly and just wondering if anyone has had experience with this as an alternative to exporer. It has some nice features and is very fast - even faster than Firefox.

i tried it, yah it's faster, BUT, i like how you can customize the hell out of FFox.
As for Opera, i feel sorry for people who bought the full blown version a few weeks before Opera decided to make it completely free...that would have sucked.

I was able to install the extensions and that was about it - what kind of customizations are you able to do. I still cannot even get it to accept rollyo searches - keeps telling me there is a problem with the software - strange it works on my laptop but not on my desktop. I have tried with the most recent version as well.

Opera has been around a long time

Great browser. It's been around 10 years and was the best alternative to IE until Firefox came out. I've stopped using it in favour of Firefox, but still maintain a few old Win95 & 98 machines that are running Opera great (smaller memory footprint and much better performance).

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_(browser) for info on it.

firefox extensions, i recommend...
adblock, forecastfox, flashblock, noscript

noscript is GREAT, it lets you control what java based applications you'll allow to run while viewing a website. it's AMAZING to see how many java applications run on a basic site.
running noscript, will also help prevent trojan/virus or other forms of attacks, that certain sites do through java.

Opera

Been using Opera for over 5 yrs and think it's great.
All versions used so far were free.
Just did a recent DL of Version 9 but like Ver 8.53 better.

It has lots of neat features and it is the FASTEST of them all.
Also use FF, Mozilla and IE once in awhile but still like Opera better.

Opera has a built in,
word translation,
dictionary/with a voice even pronouncing words for you,
encyclopedia,
and spellcheck features.

Plus it's very porn friendly. Pix can be enlarged & made smaller by simply hitting the + and - , keys on your keyboard........;)

There are many keyboard shortcuts on Opera.

I'd say it opens 95% of the sites visited. If there is a problem getting in a site, the other browsers serve as backups.

Tabbed browsing

Credit where it's due: I forgot to mention earlier that Opera brought tabbed browsing out long ago - one of the features that really helped Firefox catch fire (and which MS is going to copy next).

InterWorks was first with tabbed browsing, but Opera was first to popularize it.

I can't even remember how long I've been using it. I tried Firefox as well but have stuck with Opera. Sometimes I even run v 9 and 8.xx concurrently.

I said that in a previous thread on favourite browsers.
Sometimes I think they designed it with that in mind.

Intersting stuff on the history of Opera..I always thought it was a MAc browser..never knew it was for windows as well.

As for tab browsing..I hate it! If you miss hit the q key you're suddenly in a new window..arrg..and for poor typists like me...it happens a lot!

I reinstalled an IE 6 version after I loaded the latest pre vista IE...hated the damn thing!

Opera has versions that work on both Windows and Mac.

Some other good points are Opera uses less PC resources than IE.
IE is a resouce-hog like many MS programs. FFox is also good on using less resources than IE.

Tabbed browsing is great. At times I will have 10 tabs open and running at a time.

Which brings up another good Opera feature.
Say you have those 10 tabs open while doing some multitasking and run into a bad weblink while surfing that causes your browser to freeze, lockup from going into an 'illegal operation' and shut down. When you reopen Opera it will say it noted you had a problem last time on, and Opera will ask you if you want to go back to where you were at when it crashed. If you answer yes, Opera will take you right back to where you were and restore those 10 tabs you were using before it crashed.

Regarding the BitTorrent feature on Opera ver 9,
You don't need a separate BitTorrent application to download large files. Simply click a torrent link and start the download.

If FireFox crashes and you have that "restore" extensions installed, it'll ask you if you want to "restore your session" from before. Same deal. =)
I have 28 extensions ...it's addicting, but great and fun, to tweak the hell out of your own browser to your liking =)

I just installed the voice "extension" for Opera. In a word, wicked!

It will read what you highlight with voice inflections, provided punctuation is present. I spend a lot of time in front of a monitor so it will be nice to have TERB posts read to me while resting my eyes. Also, I won't have to be annoyed by those lengthy posts that are hard to read from lack of paragraphs. (Although I suppose it won't do much about bad spellers. lol)

Apparently, you can use voice commands to browse as well, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

I installed the extension on both v 8.xx and 9 (I have different versions on different computers). You'll know if your version has that capability by highlighting some text and right-clicking on it; you'll see an option that says "Speak". Click on that and it will automatically initiate the download. It will also open a new page with instructions on how to configure and use it. (Note that you can choose a male or female sounding voice.)

After it's installed, you can just press "v" on your keyboard after you've highlighted the text. (God, I love those keyboard shortcuts!)
