Hi,

I'd like to order some DVDs from a website based in the US, probably Amazon.com.

The Amazon website says that there may be a customs charge at the border.

Has anyone incurred the customs charge for DVDs ordered from the US?

You likely be charged GST & PST along with a handling fee (from Canada Post) as I did on a small item.

I'm 100% certain they don't charge anything for CDs and I don't recall ever being charged anything for DVDs.

then again they may charge something on ... ahem ... certain "small items"

If you're looking to buy DVD's from Amazon.com then try Amazon.ca first as it is easier, no custom's duties, and often they have free shipping but they don't always have the same selection as the US based Amazon.

Which is extremely peculiar, because Amazon.com services Canada from Windsor. (and I don't mean Amazon.ca -- I do know the difference.). Hoever, they'll chenerally hcarge you theappropriate Canadia taxes. But their stuff never arrives with customs materil attached.

yeah, I always buy from amazon.com coz it`s cheaper even with the exchange rate, shipping cost (vs free shipping from amazon.ca) and often faster. Like gallus said, amazon.com has a far better selection and if amazon.ca do have harder to find stuff their prices are usually ridiculous.

buying CDs online

Gemm, djangos & caiman also sell DVDs

How much does it cost to import DVDs into Canada ?
(Information for Canadian Residents)

It depends on the value and origin of the CDs :

All shipments valued at less than $20 Canadian are exempt from duties, fees and taxes.

All orders valued at more than $20 Canadian are subject to taxes (GST/PST or HST) and a customs handling fee charged by Canada Post or the courier service you used to import the merhandise (Customs handling fees range from $5 with Canada Post to $10 for most couriers but UPS is known to charge more).

All CDs manufactured outside of Canada and the United States that are included in a shipment valued at more than $20 Canadian are also subject to a 6% duty.

Note that Canada Post does not use the commercial exchange rate to determine a shipments value in Canadian dollars. They use their own rate, determined by a system in which a rounded off rate changes only when a new rate has been stable for two days. (CCRA Postal Importation Information)

I don't know what to tell ya, except that has not been my experience from any place I've bought from and I'm probably better off not to say openly exactly how much I buy. Some places are conservative with declared value, while others are not.
