A grisly video of a Chinese toddler run over by a van has sparked outrage and disbelief in Chinese media.

Closed-circuit camera footage posted on YouTube and Youku, a Chinese video-sharing site, shows that the 2-year-old, identified by the China Daily newspaper as Yueyue, was left writhing in a street as roughly a dozen pedestrians, cyclists and motorists passed by inside a wholesale market in Foshan, a city in China’s southern Guangdong province.

The passers-by all also ignored the girl’s bloody body.

A rickshaw driver, a motorcyclist and even a woman hand-in-hand with a young child noticed the toddler, but neglected to stop. The girl was run over a second time by a light-duty truck.

After the first van driver struck the little girl, he paused, his vehicle straddling the girl’s torso, before driving forward, running her over a second time with his back wheel and then driving away. One commenter on the Twitter-style Chinese microblogging site Weibo posted, “This society is seriously ill. Even cats and dogs shouldn’t be treated so heartlessly.”

Another wrote: “Now people ignore everything other than money. This society is lacking people with a conscience badly.”

Thousands of Weibo users are posting the hashtag, “Please end the indifference.”

Nearly 10 minutes after the initial accident, a 57-year-old garbage collector scooped Yueyue’s from the middle of the road and placed her out of harm’s way. The China Daily reported that the rescuer had been ignored when she sought help for the girl.

One Weibo user named Johnny Yao decried the video as an unflattering example of modern China.

“This just shows how abnormal is the moral situation in this society! The sad Chinese, poor China, are we even rescuable?”

The girl died from her injuries at the General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command on Sunday, according to the Shanghai Daily.

Yueyue had just returned from kindergarten, when her mother left her alone at the family’s hardware store to retrieve laundry, the China Daily reported.

The newspaper said the van and truck drivers were arrested on Sunday.

There is another thread about this with the video. Don't watch it... it's horrific.

I couldn't help but wonder if the child had been male, if it would have made a difference.

This sort of sad sorry thing happens in many societies and countries.
It even happened in the USA back in 1964.

Check out the Murder of Kitty Genovese where folks/neighbors in the USA did pretty much the same as what just happened in China...:eyebrows:

this is the 2011, not 1964.. Not some third world country we're talking about.. although such behaviour could be considered

On a radio interview with the first driver that hit her he claims he made sure to run her over again with his back tires and that she die because the fine was much less for a dead person then that of hospital bills he would have to pay if she lived

Sadly this tells you a lot about Chinese society today. Communism has ruined those people.

So, ummm... When the same basic thing happens in North America (google it, you'll find it, there's plenty of cases), does that mean that Capitalism ruined Americans and Canadians?

I'm just curious...

Such a horrific incident :(

But, the value of life severely lacks in China/India/Parts of Africa...you may have had similar incidents in the US/Canada/Europe but I don't think they happen as frequently as I think they do in those asian countries.

If anything good can come of this perhaps the PRC will enact a "Good Samaritan Law."

As matters now stand not only is there not only is not such a law, but there have been several high-profile law suits where good Samaritans have been ordered to pay hefty danages to individuals they sought to help.

the video was disturbing, but had I not seen it for myself, I would not have been able to believe how heartless some of society has become. I just cannot understand how someone feels it better to run over a child a second time to make sure the kid is dead in order to pay a lesser fine??? WTF. it was a two year old little girl!! No doubt there is a lot of soul searching going on, I appears some have no souls at all.

Yeah certain cases in china have gone against those people who aid the injured or troubled.

Blame the system not the public, I wouldn't want to get sued or spend jail time.

Would you???

...you're responsible.

The system is fucked, yes. But so are a lot more people than the 'system'.

Can we talk about Russell Wiliams now, "Canadians"???
Where there bystanders inolved? you cannot compare the cases. This says something about the attitude of their society in general.

There is little excuse not to take time out and notify the authorities that a girl has been run over.

If you think this is the worst that happens to kids in China, dream on. Kids kidnapped, having their backs broken to make them beggars to make money for some fucked up mini crime organization...on and on.
However, things aren't much better in about 70% of the world.
