Patrick Ewing - sure
Dirk Nowitzki - ok
Jason Kidd - wrong
Tedy Bruschi - huh?
Junior Seau - nope
Vince Carter - yup
Chris Webber - uh huh
Brett Favre - ???
Tony Romo - until he actually does something, I agree
Emmitt Smith..........yes I said it! (dealt with this)
Of those I agree with (Ewing, Carter and Webber), most are simply because they had all the tools and just didn't put it together and do all of the little things needed to be a winner.
Dirk Nowitzki is a very good player who has had a series of bad coaches and an owner who meddles too much. On the right team, I think everyone would see him in a different light.
Tony Romo was an undrafted QB out of college - anything he does is gravy. But it's annoying how the media fawns over him, given that he's done nothing. He owes Parcells his entire career.
Those I disagree with:
Jason Kidd: makes every team and teammate better. One of the only true point guards in the NBA in the last 20 years. Great passer. Great defender. Floor general who runs an incredibly efficient offence. May run the best fast break ever. Cons: Below average shooter. Drama seems to follow him.
Tedy Bruschi would have to be 'rated' to be overrated. No one ever considered him the best at his position or HOF material. Physically average, overachieving very good player and emotional defensive leader of the Pats' Super Bowl teams. Tremendous heart, as demonstrated by his coming back from a stroke.
Junior Seau was amazing in San Diego. Big, fast, strong and durable. Blew up plays before they got started. Played well vs. run and pass. Could rush the QB when needed. Cons: freelanced too much, especially early on in career.
Brett Favre, until his last couple of seasons in GB and the one year with the Jets, was one of the most durable and dynamic players ever. Found the fountain of youth last year. Had little talent around him and yet the Packers were contenders every year - 13 straight .500 or better seasons. Great leader (until recently - notice a trend.) Cons: as he became more famous, tried too hard to be the "gunslinger" and became sloppy with the football. The "will-he-or-won't-he" shit of the last 3 years is childish.
For whatever reason, you seem to undervalue durability in the NFL. Ask any coach what they want - a dynamic couple of games or 16 (+ playoffs) games year-in, year-out. 99% will choose the latter.
