Partition Question

My son just got a new PC with a 400GB HDD.
It has 2 partitions, a huge ~390GB C drive and a 10GB D drive for recovery.
Question: can that C drive be further patitioned to say 80GB with the remaining space being used to create another storage partition or two using Vista administrative tools section, etc., where it won't damage the existing OS Vista?

I know you could do it running XP using 'Partition Magic'.

I doubt if Vista's administrative tools section will allow you to adjust the size of an active partition, and if you used Partition Magic I'm not sure if all the extra security bells and whistles in Vista would go off thinking you were trying to pull something.

Re-install

Re-install the OS completely, but backup on cd/dvd you personal files because YOU WILL LOOSE THEM.

It seems you will have to create the 10gig partition of swap file and recovery.

Thanks for the tips so far

Was hoping to avoid having to reinstall the OS.
Tried it a couple times with XP but it always made me wipe everything clean.

Several times in the past I have done this by setting up my partitions, then reformat the drive then reload XP, along with all my programs, from a spare HDD saved for this reason. This took me 17 minutes. Have done it this way several times with no problems. It sure beats reinstalling XP from a CD, then one by one installing all your programs which can take 8-10 hours.

Windows won't let me adjust the size of an active partition. Why I don't know because I also run linux and linux allows you to adjust the size of an active partition. Guess it is just a MS thing.
