If I heard correctly Joe Paterno has been relieved of his duties effective immediately, which means he will NOT be the HC this Saturday.
Can't see that anywhere. Do you remember where it was reported?

I had just got in the car and turned on the radio, FAN590, but I could not tell if they were 'reporting' an item that was just announced or they were 'what ifing'.

PATERNO'S RETIREMENT STATEMENT

"I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today,"

"That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

"This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more. My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this university."

-------

I love how he thinks he can make a decision to retire and try to strong arm the board into not letting him go immediately.

Paterno has got all kinds of credit for molding young men. It was not the AD's nor the President who got the credit. Now, due to his position of prominence, he had the greatest ability to stop the endangerment of many children. And yet people want to now pass the blame off him and onto the AD and the President. Amazing.

The other troubling part of the statement. As I heard it on the radio earlier, I was so expecting him to end the sentence..."And I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help......." with children, rather then university. That ending sentence, shows where all the priorities were on this, and why such heinous decisions were made by those in power.

OK. It was reported on FOX Sports website that it is being reported from a New York Times story that Penn State is, or will attempt, to get Paterno out before Saturday's game.

Paterno canned effective immediately. Presser currently on CNN.

I still can't believe that Paterno tried to strongarm the board earlier today. That final show of EXTREME ARROGANCE had to be last straw for them.

Students are starting to gather at Penn St upset over the Paterno termination.

To lose perspective to such a degree, because of your love for a sports figure, is really disheartening.

Seems like there will be some riots tonight.

I'm not that familiar with the NCAA rules - does anyone know if they are investigating? Are sanctions possible?

And if there are riots - those students are only making a horrible situation worse.

How many times are you going to rearrange this post ?
I am sure it said "students are beginning to riot on campus" and I turn on CNN and they are just gathering to show support for Paterno. Then I come back and the word riot is no where to be seen, now it has reappeared.

What up Mo ?

Cut the kids some slack for now. They are young and passionate about their school and it is under 'attack'. I am sure after a few days when it sinks in, most, if not all, will come around and see this must happen, Paterno has to go along with the other faculty involved.

No and no.

The NCAA is a voluntary organization. The NCAA is basically the moderators here on TERB. The moderators here on TERB have quite a bit of power on TERB, but outside of TERB there's nothing they can really do to you.

Same thing with the NCAA. The NCAA's only concern is college sports. This Penn State scandal has nothing to do with college sports, really, except that it occurred at the facilities and with personnel who are part of college sports, but not in their capacity as coaches/athletes.

This is entirely a law enforcement issue, Penn State internal matter and Penn State public relations matter.

As announced by The Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees Wednesday night, Tom Bradley will assume head coaching duties for the Penn State football team for the remainder of the 2011 season, replacing long-time head coach Joe Paterno.

from the PSU Athletic website. And there is only two more paragraphs in the statement. the Nebraska-PSU game is on ESPN (here in the states) at noon ET .. I bet there are 10-15 million viewers for the first 15 minutes of the broadcast due to the curious that will watch to see if anything happens.

Ironically, the grad assistant that caught the ex coach in the shower with the kid is now a coach at PSU and is not in any trouble.

It called an EDIT Button and trying to be accurate or adding onto a post. Hardly unreasonable. Is this really what your going to take me on with?

When you post something that is inaccurate you can go EDIT it, My first thoughts were riot, then I corrected it when it was not the case at the time.

The last sentence was framed as speculative rather then factual. Do you not see a difference? And given that there was some riots later last night, its not like it was unreasonable speculation.

But Ironhead I invite you to keep taking me on - I have no use for Extreme Homers who can't think logically.

"Take you on" lol. What the fuck is up your ass ? We going to war or something ?
"Take you on" lol, yeah OK Rambo.

Jeez, poke some light hearted fun at the guy and he is ready to go to war. Ga-damn I hope you are not tearing up over this.

:focus:

Paterno has been fired. I kind of see this as Penn State throwing Paterno under the bus. Desperate move, hoping to lighten the coming law suits.
Should Paterno lose his job ? Yes, I believe he should. He failed to act when the people he reported the incident to chose to do nothing. The problem I have is that I heard that Paterno is on his own as far as law suits go, for instance if one or more of the victim were to name him in a suit I take it he is alone. I know Paterno does not deserve much, if any sympathy, but the school has a lot of money to defend itself and payout settlements. I would remind them where a good portion of that money came from.

Paterno is not alone when it comes to law suits. He would have the same insurance coverage and the school does for this issue, as well as vicarious liability to protect him.

I don't think Paterno should have been fired. He reported the allegations as he should have and has fully co-operated with the investigation.
