I like that show "End of the leash" - the brad guy is a bit of a dick to the owners but he keeps telling people that they have to speak to their dogs through body language. That dogs communicate 90% that way. The fact that dogs try pretty hard to figure out what the fuck we are talking about to them when we speak, yet not many of us take the time to learn how to communicate with them through our body language makes me wonder who the smart ones really are.

^^ I'm just playing... I thought it was funny. :0) Trust me, I know all about animals (well, primates anyway) and language as that was part of my focus in university.
What I thought it was funny was that the guy who thought talking to pets was odd was spending his time kicking a ball around a park.

The other day I was in a park kicking a ball.
This concerns me more than anyone that talks to their dog. I mean how old are you? Who does this as an adult? And please tell me you at least had a 'friend" with you or a little child ;)

Did any one catch the Doc show, Pet Pharma, the other day. Billions are spent on peoples pets, the Japanese being the big spenders, and the big push is for Prozac type meds for the pussy/pooch, when the real problem is overbreeding and anthropomorphizing pets.

How are they ever supposed to learn to talk if you don't talk to them? It's the same way we teach language to children. I remember reading that even 'baby talk' helps kids to learn (repetition etc.) even though it's supremely annoying to listen to.

Hey, if I can talk to a golf ball I just hit while it's in the air, or my bowling ball when it's half-way down the alley, I can sure as heck talk to my dog! (Sometimes I even talk to my television.)

I talk to mine all the time. If I tell her to go sit in the chair she goes and sits in the chair. If I say go sit on the couch she goes and sits on the couch.

You would be surprised how much they understand.

IF I say do you want to go for a drive she goes and sits at the garage door. When I ask her what she wants on the pizza I am about to order she always gets it right and tells me sausage, red peppers, green peppers and onion.

:D

I used to talk to my dog like that, I knew she couldn't understand but I liked the idea she could. She would cock her head trying to figure out what I was saying. It was more for my benefit than the dog's, having someone to talk to - I still miss her.

It would look a bit crazy to a passerby, I agree.
I used to always talk to my weasel (I'm a FEMALE so I'm NOT refering to a part of my anatomy!). Some may agree - some may not but I KNOW he understood some of what I told him, especially when I told him I loved him. He was my little man. I miss him too....
