Percocet Oxycontin addiction?

Did anybody see the W5 segment on Percocet & Oxycontin addiction?

Seems this stuff is more highly addictive than most people thought.

My question is(hopefully to be answered by someone with some medical training or personel experience) -

I have been taking Percocet's for over a year now for degenerative disc pain in my back. My prescription is 5mg of Oxcodone HCL and 325mg of acetaminophen twice daily. I take one about 12 hours apart...6am and 6pm...roughly. I find that if I am late with a dose, I get very edgy, hyper...sometimes short-tempered as I am nearing time for the next dose.

Since seeing the show, I have tried to cut back to one/day....but am not having too much luck...do I have a physical addiction or a pschological addiction?

When I first started taking them I started out at four/day...and cut back to twice when I started taking Vioxx.

Now that Celebrex and Vioxx are basically off the market, the Percocets are just not doing the job...but I don't want to go back to four/day....hey, I feel groovey taking four, but I don't need another problem...

Anyone?

It was an enlightening W5 for sure. However, that being said, the patients on the show up their doses considerably to 80mg/day. It was at these much higher doses that they became edgy, unstable and suicidal. If I were you I would speak to a Professional-read Doctor as each patient is different.

If it were me, I would try to get of it and find a non addictive pain killer.

I have a few health problems that require me to take pain pills like you. However, the best thing I ever could have done was go to a pain specialist. This is basically a doctor who monitors your intake of the pain medication and helps you deal with both the pain, and taking the medication (i.e. address your concerns over becoming addicted, etc.) He is a wealth of information and probably your best bet as to your particular situation. It's not like you're taking the meds for fun, you actually need them, so you may as well get someone to help you deal with that aspect of your condition.

Thank you Rubmeister, Chivas Regal, and Lil' Miss...for your input...and advice.

Like Lil' Miss, I have multiple problems, all stemming from sports accidents years past....you wouldn't know to look at me now, but I was something of a jock years past...hurt the disc's in a horse racing accident....knee playing soccer....and a recent ankle injury playing beach volleyball last summer....at 46 and an extra 100 lbs I shoulda known better.

There is a pain specialist right down the hall from my GP...I am going to ask for a referral....on the subject of naproxen(Aleve), I heard it is just as bad as Vioxx and Celebrex in inducing a cardiac event....

Thanks Terbies!!!

1 year on OXCOD you are wired.

Believe it or not almost 1/2 of methadone patients are OXY patients not street drugs per say

so what does that mean--IF you need 2 oxycocet to get by each day--so be it...if you start to want more the 2 per day the watch out

it is all a benefit vrs risk calculation..you have to have a quality of life.

Cheers

One thing someone told me is that if you take percocet and you experience the "high" or the europhia some speak of, your pain is probably not serious enough to warrant taking that strong a drug...however, if you take percocet or oxycontin, and you only experience a cessation of the pain, that mean that taking it is appropriate therapy.

you're not addicted in the traditional sense. you are dependant on the drug for pain relief and when and if you decide to cease the prescription you will have side effects. keep in mind though that pain studies proved years ago that analgesics used for pain control rarely ended with the patient being physically addicted. taking opiates for recreational uses ends up with more serious addiction issues. if the meds are helping you and there is no other intervention that can help i.e. surgery...then just keep taking them.

If I were you I'd become a profesional athelete. None of the drug testing policies check for these drugs, and the team doctors prescribe them like pez. Jeez, do you think any atheletes are addicted to pain pills. Noooo, what was I thinking.

they don't test for opiates? I find that hard to believe? what organization are you talking about? I will say the don't test athletes all that much for ANYTHING...only when they want to make an example, but, opiates are soooo easy to detect in urine...growth hormone and insulin are almost undetectable

Yes and so are some of the water-based steroids.
The oil-based roids take a long time to pass through the system
Nandrolone is one of the worst

water based...trenbolone acetate, test propianate etc..

many athletes have been busted for these...oh an winstrol (ben johnson)...it depends on how accurate the testing is

nandrolone decanoate is detectable for almost 1 year after
I don't know about nandrolone phenylpropianate though...it's a much "faster" nandrolone
