This is terrible news and my heart goes out to his family and close friends. Zezel was a class guy all the way. He was a good hockey player, I remember first seeing him at a Marlies game and he scored a hat trick. I was glad that he had the opportunity to play for his beloved (and mine) Leafs and he was excellent in a checking role. Also a helluva soccer player.

RIP Peter!

Hopefully you'll have the class and decency to not resort to your typical insults in a thread dealing with the death of a human being.

I think he was refering to the checking line. And no we're not talking about Aki Berg.

As for a few critcizing about the time it was mentioned about being taken off life-support, I heard it on the News at Noon on CTV.

Very sad...

..as part of the '93 and 94 Leaf playoff ,Zezel was a integral part of the team. As far as his ability?..more skilled than he got credit for, and anyone who lasts 15 seasons in the NHL has accomplished something professionally. In interviews, he always came across as a good guy. Entertaining to watch whenever he was on TSN's Off the Record. 44 yrs old is way too young...my condolences to his family and friends...

Do you have respect, class or dignity? That was a stupid comment.

If you don't have anything good to say about a great person that just passed away then keep those comments to yourself.

I have enjoyed you posts and have had a good laugh many times but that was uncalled for.

Zez has been battling for quite a few years it seems. I remember a friend saying that Zez had put on alot of weight, as he had seen Zez playing in the beer leagues with the rest of us, we laughed of course, but maybe this was a part of his disease/sickness. Too bad really, a great guy and good hockey player. It has to be hardest on his family right now and for him before he died knowing, as he must have, that he was dying and wouldn't be there for them:(

My last memories of Peter was seeing him play in the OHA Senior 'A' Hockey League for the Cambridge Hornets. I used to hit the odd game over in Dundas and the times he came in, he just looked like a regular guy having fun on a Friday night with his hockey buddies

I think the weight gain was from the meds he was on? Thought I read that somewhere years ago.

So sad, one of the real good guys in sports.

Peter Zezel. I loved that guy.....not literally...just to clearify.

I remember him in my youth playing for philly. He was a solid NHL player, somewhat underrated.

he will be missed and his legacey is something his family should be proud off.

his death is curious indeed, I believe it was an intercranial hemorrhage post splenectomy - possibly secondary to his hemolytic anemia). This is the epidural hematoma that took natasha richardson's life and is usually assocaited with trauma as in her case or several other pathologies.

Remind me not to go that hospital for any surgery.

A toast to Peter Zezel. Thanks for the Game.

Peter Zezel was ledgendary among NHL players for the amount of pussy he got during his career. He was a solid two way player & an excellent face off winner. He was very well liked as we see from the outpouring of grief for him.

In simple English, did Peter's blood suffer from a lack of red cells (hemoglobin)?
As far as I read the only condition Peter Zezel had was hemolytic anemia - his blood cells would lysis, get destroyed - thereby lowing his hematocrite (red blood cells - and all the stuff inside such as hemoglobin, and releasing the other junk inside red blood cells in to the blood) faster than it can be reproduced. There are several causes of this. I could not find what condition lead to Peter Zezel's hemolytic anemia. They are either hereditary or acquired.

But that should not have been the cause of death necessarily...i did play hockey with the condition. Perhaps if facilitated the bleed, a secondary cause. The brain hemorrhage is what caused his death and the anemia may have been a facilitating factor.

Wikipedia says he undergone chemotherapy for something. Some malignancies can cause hemolytic anemia.

His spleen was removed suggesting either splenomegally due to the chronicity of his condition to the point of removal or he had Hereditary Spherocytosis as the cause of his hemolytic anemia whereby splenectomy is a classic treatment.

The truth is with the physicians and family.

Our prayers are with the family

The recent passing of Peter Zezel at the relatively young age of 44 is just the latest in a not so short list of NHL'ers or their relations who passed prematurely. Several were killed in road or water accidents. Others like Wickenheiser, Nyrop, Larocque and Mrs. Gainey from natural causes.
