Can you turn a computer into a phone?

It should be possible.

I dont know how to do it.

is there a program that you can recieve calls that come to your house, just like all the phones in the house do? and just pick it up via the program, from windows and have it transmitted to the microphone, ear-phone you got installed into the computer?

I'm wondering cause I wanna try using an earphones to talk to people, instead of the old-fashioned hand held.

I believe the sound quality will be even more crystal clear.

Used to be (maybe 6 or so years ago) that desktops with modems came preloaded with telephony software. I think even early versions of Windows had some kind of dialer. I've searched high and low for a good free program but haven't had any luck.

The answers have already been posted - modem, or alternatively VoIP (SIP or proprietary systems like Skype) - but you could go the whole hog and turn your computer into your own private PBX: http://www.asterisk.org/ .

I'd stick with a modem or VoIP though (VoIP *won't* be "crystal clear", but it'll be cheap).

If you just want to use a headset, those are available for telephones.
