Went to Cuba in October and December and thought I would share some of the pictures taken while there. Stayed at a resort, but most of the time i was off touring the countryside on a scooter. It took some time to commit to going, but now I can't wait to go back, the scenery, people, weather and atmosphere are all beautiful. The trip was a none stop adventure.

If you are hesitant to travel, like I was, or have not traveled there yet, just do it!

KBear: see the response you get? No one wants to know about your trip to Cuba they just want to know if you got lucky. I on the other hand being a member of the Bear Clan am seriously interested in the cultural aspects of your vacation. So, did you get laid?

Very nice photos kbear. I'm heading down to Cuba in a week or so but to a different area. I've been to Holguin and the Guardalavaca area several times.

I used an Olympus D-510, a pocket camera which is now very obsolete, but cost $700 a few years ago, and an Nikon D70. In good lighting the pictures turn out similar, it is in dark or tricky lighting that the Nikon really shines.

Getting laid, my main goal was to tour around the countryside and meet the people, but I will share what I learned…. In the tourist areas there are quite a few police, and the ladies are hesitant to be seen with tourists. Ladies can be charged/fined if found with tourists, and if they get a few fines they may find themselves in jail. Guys setting up tourist with ladies can go directly to jail. Even at the local diso, I made a point of standing alone, expecting to be rushed by hordes of ladies, but nothing. If you are connected, there are still ladies around in the tourist areas looking to meet a nice guy, but you need the time and connections.

In the countryside where I spent most of my time, the ladies would be happy to chat, and would give me their name and address suggesting that we could go register with the police and spend the week together. To offer these ladies money would be an insult. The other issue in the country was that everyone knows each other, so the ladies were worried about gossip. There were people that would hook you up with their cousin, sister-in-law, etc and rent you a room for $5. The girls did not want money for service, but would be happy to be given $20 to help her out with school, baby etc.

In the smaller cities like Holguin, and in Banes there is no problem meeting up with ladies. I spent some time in Banes, which is a dusty little city in the middle of nowhere, no tourists and no police. It took the locals, one of them being a retired Canadian guy that married a young girl and was living with her parents in the town, maybe 5-10 minutes to hook me up with a girl room etc. Unfortunately, the first time when they insisted on setting things up I realized that the sun was setting and I had to drive 40Km back to the resort in the dark, so I left. The girl in the picture at the cottage is another girl that they set me up with to tour around the countryside with. Sadly, the girl, or her mother, got nervous after a couple of days and she did not want to be seen outside with me, police worries. So they set me up with another lady, but she was older, missing some teeth… so I bolted.

Met some guys at the airport that were sold on Santiago as the city to go to meet up with ladies. This city is away from the tourist area, ie few police, and is big enough to offer some selection for the guys and anonymity to the ladies.

I picked up some Spanish, and could understand some of what people were saying if they spoke slow, but could not speak any. Many of the younger people spoke a little English, and I had a phrase book that helped. Also had a computer translator that they seemed to like playing with. It would have been better at times to have spoken some Spanish, but there were never any real problems. On the resorts many spoke English, German, French and Spanish.

Nice pictures KBear.

Personally, Cuba is a no go zone for me.
I like to be free to have a great open time with my chicas.
Dominican Republic is a very open fun place with no worries about the cops.
Plus they have casinos, massage parlours, strip clubs, car washes, and numerous other clubs with chicas, and some nice golf courses too.

I'm going back for my 6th tour of duty soon.

Great pics KBear! I was at Cayo Coco last October, pretty nice place although the island was developed specifically to prevent locals from seeing tourists. It did have the best beach I have seen so far. Sitting around, eating, drinking and smoking cigars all day long was fun. Even when it rained it was fun - 10AM at the bar, having breakfast whisky and cigar

KBear...awesome photos! Olympus always had very nice colour balance. My Nikon D1's magenta shift was terrible; the D1x was much better, but still doesn't come close to the Olympus.

Why would car washes be so important for a vacation destination?

I have been to both Holguin and Santiago and stayed in those cities. In my experience the police influence in Holguin is overbearing and girls are generally scared to be seen in public with tourists (mostly). While in Santiago it was possible to walk hand in hand past a police officer without a care. It's true Santiago is the second most populous city in Cuba behind Havana but Holguin is not a small city by Cuban standards. It is one of the major cities and is more than large enough to provide some anonymity for the girls. As well, it is quite distant from the tourist areas. However, the enforcement climate is much different than Santiago. I have some fond memories of some really unique times in Holguin.

Lately I've been spending my Cuban vacations in the quiet little beach area of Santa Lucia which is a bus ride from another major Cuban city (Camaguey). Police presence there is quite heavy but there are loads of girls looking to spend time with a tourist with a small amount of cash or a fair disposition.
