Pipe Smoking?

Yeah..You all have drity minds.
I used to smoke a half a pack a day. Never a "big" smoker, but I enjoyed the ritual, and since I did not smoke too much, I prefered "richer, stronger" tobbacco. Now for a varitety of reasons, I quit about 15 years ago.
During the cigar craze from about 2000, I tried a few, but really did not find the taste too nice.
Anybody take up pipe smoking later in life? Does it put you in danger of picking up the coffin nails again, or does it satisfy your "smoking urges"

I assume you get a nicotine hit from the smoke ( Yeah I know you don't inhale, but some nicotine must pass through the mouth.)

So any answers for the curious.

There are many ways of taking tobacco besides cigarettes. Of the many smokers that I grew up around, none of those who didn't quit were able to replace their cigarette urge with other, more pure forms of tobacco.

I'd say it's from a combination of mental and physical factors. Physically, their adiction may have as much to do with the chemical additive package in cigarettes as it does with the actual tobacco. Mentally, the speed and convenience factor of cigarettes can't be beat - they're ready to go in the blink of an eye, and because you inhale, you absorb alot very quickly.

My dad tried switching to pipe smoking in the 80's and while he liked the flavour, it really didn't make a dent in his smoking because he just couldn't bother with the pipe during his breaks at work or while he was driving. It's not really usefull as crutch for stress or for a quick hit for a busy person.

Tabbaco pipes are quite nice and far less annoying then cirgars to others. Find a good blend and get a variety of pipes. You want to let a pipe sit for a few days after smoking it for a day to advoid excessive moisture in it.

Find a good tabbaconist and a mild aromatic blend.

I figure pipe smoking are alot less harmful to me cuz i don't inhale as compared to cigarettes. Other advantages i find that you can pick certain blends based on mild, medium and full strength in terms of nic content, some blends the odor of the smoke is not that offensive even pleasant, as well as the great variety of flavours or non if you prefer and finally you can load your bowl according to how little or alot of time you have available. The whole ritual of pipe smoking; loading the bowl, tampering, lighting it up and cleaning it out after aka the whole process to be calming and meditative. If you are just starting out go for the corn cob pipe; its inexpensive and lower maintenace.

I am a pipe smoker.

There are ups and downs with everything, but off the start........

It will take a while for your tongue to become accustomed to the tongue bite, it can be quite painful for the first few weeks. You may become frustrated trying to keep your pipe lit, usually because it is packed too loose or too tightly. Don't give up though, practise makes perfect. Pipes are expensive. A medium quality briar pipe will run between $85 and $150, and it is a good idea to have at least 2 of them so they can rest between smoking. Don't be afraid to buy a clean used pipe, they are affordable and broken in. It may take time to find tobacco(s) that you like, there are a million choices. A pipe usually takes between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours to finish, so it is hard to have one on your lunch break. In the grand scheme of things, pipe tobacco is less expensive than cigarettes or cigars. A cob or 2 might be a good place to start. Don't buy tobacco from a 7-11 type store, the stuff they sell is usually shit. Instead go to Thomas Hinds in Yorkvale or the Cigar Studio in Etobicoke or somewhere where somebody actually knows what they are talking about. When you smoke a pipe, lots of people look at you like you are some sort of freak, especially when you are young. They do not satisfy as much as cigs off the start, but then again you inhale a cig, but enjoy a pipe. Oh yeah, Cobs are a great starter pipe and are really cheap, and don't forget the pipe cleaners.

Anything else PM me.

Cheers.

Here's an interesting article on the health risks of pipe smoking. http://healthresources.caremark.com/topic/pipes Ugh!

I'd suggest you just buy a tweed jacket with the leather patches and let it go at that.

Yeah. Thanks JW. I knew that. Thanks for bringing it to my attention again.
I quit smoking. I should stay off the stuff.

By the way, you better be careful, people are going to think you care.
